Mauno Koivisto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mauno Henrik Koivisto (born November 25, 1923) was the President of Finland from 1982 to 1994.
Mauno Koivisto was born in Turku, Finland, the second son of Juho Koivisto, a shipwright, and Hymni Sofia Eskola, who died when he was 10.
Koivisto won 167 of the 301 votes in the electoral college in the second round against 58 for his nearest rival, the National Coalition Party candidate Harri Holkeri.

Summoned again in 1979 to serve as prime minister, Koivisto retained the public's esteem and became a strong potential candidate for the presidential election scheduled for 1984.
Koivisto's survival despite Kekkonen's challenge was seen by some observers as the end of an era in which the president had dominated Finnish public life.
Overall, Koivisto's presidency has marked a coming of age for the Finnish polity, an emergence from the harsh tutelage of the Kekkonen years, and the increasing resemblance of Finnish political life to that of other successful Western democracies.

Koivisto said that Russia has undergone a period of disunity almost as long, with certain similarities to smuta, although the two cannot be compared directly.
Koivisto was quite amused by Russia's first steps in the early 1990s when the Soviet Union had broken up and the country wanted to shake off the "superfluous" Soviet republics.
According to Mauno Koivisto, the leaders in Moscow had the idea that the distant areas were feeding off the central government.

 TIME.com: Favorite Son -- Feb. 1, 1982 -- Page 1
When the tally was completed, Mauno Koivisto, 58, the son of a carpenter and the holder of a Ph.D. in sociology, last week won 50.1% of the vote, enough to be assured of becoming his country's next President when Finland's 301-member electoral college meets this week.
Koivisto is the first Social Democrat to be elected President in Finland, but party labels mean little in a country in which all major factions back the welfare state.
Koivisto served two terms as Prime Minister, appointed by a man who was his opposite in temperament, the autocratic and short-tempered Kekkonen.

Finland - The Presidential Election of 1988   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The contest's outcome, the re-election of Mauno Koivisto, surprised no one, yet he captured a smaller portion of the direct vote than expected--only 47.9 percent, rather than the 60 to 70 percent forecast by opinion polls during 1987.
Vayrynen was seen as the winner of this race for position, in that he had come from far behind in the polls, had easily beaten Koivisto in the northern provinces, had found good support elsewhere--except in the Helsinki area, and had cemented his leadership role in his own party.
His strong finish, and the lack of any SDP politician of Koivisto's personal stature and popularity, guaranteed Kesk continued significance in the country's political life even when in opposition, and were perhaps signs that the dominance of postindustrial southern Finland over the country as a whole might only be temporary.

HS Home 22.8.2003 - Ex-President Mauno Koivisto disagrees sharply with government on EU goals
Retired President Mauno Koivisto disagrees sharply with the views of the present government and Parliamentary speaker Paavo Lipponen (SDP) on the issue of reform in the European Union.
Koivisto feels that Lipponen is trying to disqualify all others except himself from discussing EU issues in Finland.
As former President Koivisto sees it, Lipponen does not want to encourage debate in which the government's moves toward deeper integration would be called into question.

A Step At A Time: Koivisto - Dismantling the Myths
Suomi challenges the generally accepted view of Koivisto as a bringer of change to Finland in the post-Kekkonen period, and presents the view that in many ways Koivisto merely continued the old Paasikivi-Kekkonen line, acting as an errand boy for the Soviet Union in its relations with the West.
Suomi also takes issue with the notion that Koivisto was an enthusias for constitutional reform in Finland - in his view, the president was only interested in maintaining and strengthening the president's powers in matters of foreign policy.
The debate about the book has already begun: tomorrow Finnish Parliament Speaker Paavo Lipponen (who was Koivisto's secretary during Koivisto's second term of office as Prime Minister in 1979-82) will present an attack on Suomi's study and a defence of the former president in the columns of Suomen Kuvalehti.

 Witness to History - PowerBookSearch!
When Mauno Koivisto was elected president of Finland in 1982, Leonid Brezhnev was still in the Kremlin and Ronald Reagan had been the US president for a year.
When Koivisto left office in 1994, the Soviet Union no longer existed, the 1948 treaty had been replaced, and Finland was about to become a member of the European Union, something unthinkable a few years earlier.
As such, this book is a case history of statecraft in a small country involved in great events, but it is much more than that, for Koivisto does not miss the human element or overlook the ironies of power politics among nations.

Savisaar suspects that ¨contrary to Sweden, leaders in Finland did not believe that Estonia would become independent until the declaration of independence was issued in August 1991.
Savisaar explains in great detail how Moscow said to the Finnish leaders of the time, and especially to President Koivisto, that Estonia does not want to disengage from the Soviet Union.
