Louis-César-Victor-Maurice de Broglie, known as Maurice, was a distinguished physicist who made many contributions to the study of X-rays.
Maurice presented a thesis to the University of Paris on Brownian motion.
Maurice thus set a precedent of scientific work in the de Broglie family, which was followed by his younger brother, Louis (born in 1892, seventeen years after Maurice).

Broglie defied his family's wishes and left the navy in 1904 to pursue a scientific career.
He became a member of the Académie des sciences in 1924, and in 1934 was elected to the Académie française, replacing the historian Pierre de La Gorce.

Maurice wrote: “Having experienced myself the inconvenience of a pressure exercised on the studies of a young man I refrained from imparting a rigid direction to the studies of my brother, although at times his vacillation gave me some concern.
De Broglie, influenced by Einstein’s work, proposed that just as waves can behave as particles, for instance electrons, can also behave as it were a wave motion (a de Broglie wave) with wavelength h/p, where p is the momentum of the electron and h is Planck’s constant.
De Broglie himself believed that there is true determinable physical process underlying quantum mechanics and that the current indeterminate approach in terms of probability can be replaced by a more fundamental theory.

 Jacques Laffitte - LoveToKnow 1911
The clamour of the Paris mob for the death of the imprisoned ministers of Charles X., which in October culminated in riots, induced the 1 Apollinaire Antoine Maurice, comte d'Argout (1782-1858), afterwards reconciled to the July monarchy, and a member of the Laffitte, Casimir-Perier and Thiers cabinets.
more moderate members of the government - including Guizot, the duc de Broglie and Casimir-Perier - to hand over the administration to a ministry which, possessing the confidence of the revolutionary Parisians, should be in a better position to save the ministers from their fury.
The resignation of Lafayette and Dupont de l'Eure still further undermined the government, which, incapable even of keeping order in the streets of Paris, ended by being discredited with all parties.

Quantum Physics: Louis de Broglie: Confirming de Broglie's Matter Waves / WaveLength of Quantum Physics Biography
His brother Maurice de Broglie was at that time carrying out experimental work on X-rays and this proved a considerable interest to de Broglie during the first few years of the 1920s during which he worked for his doctorate.
In 1933 de Broglie was elected to the Académie des Sciences becoming Permanent Secretary for the mathematical sciences in 1942.
De Broglie noted that relativity theory predicts that, when such a particle is set in motion, its total relativistic energy will increase, tending to infinity as the speed of light is approached.

Although his older brother Maurice was an experimental physicist of some achievement, Louis was destined to follow the family tradition of becoming a diplomat.
De Broglie described himself as "having much more the state of mind of a pure theoretician than that of an experimenter or engineer, loving especially the general and philosophical view".
Indeed the central question in de Broglie’s life and work became the one that also informed the dialogue between Einstein and Bohr, whether the statistical nature of atomic physics reflects an ignorance of the underlying facts or whether statistics is all that can be known..

In- deed, on this subject we may add, that what we have here supposed Mexico to have anticipated, has been pretty distinct- ly avowed by the President as the policy of the Administration.
We doubt, in- deed, if the President from the first, notwithstanding all the clamor he has raised about our unsettled claims on Mexico, has ever felt any serious regret after Annexation was effected with an undefined boundary for Texas, that Mex- ico should not have been brought to an independent settlement of these claims.
