Maurice Buckmaster was the first country section head to be shown a WOK (worked-out key).
Maurice relunctantly conceded that WOKs might be suitable for WT operators because they could hide them with their sets, but he was damned if he'd force organizers to carry codes as they moved around France, no matter how well the bloody things were camouflaged.
I confided to Maurice that WOKs were in very short supply and that it was most unlikely that we'd be able to spare them for all his organizers as the Free French demands were likely to be heavy.

The head of the French section (south) of the SOE was Maurice Buckmaster.
Vera Atkins (1908-2000), assistant to Buckmaster, was the soul of the SOE, so much so that many thought she actually ran the organisation.
Author Ian Fleming, who knew both Maurice Buckmaster and Vera Atkins, is reputed to have used at least parts of them to create "M", and "Miss Moneypenny" in his James Bond books.

SISSCO - Rassegna stampa - War: A Life in Secrets by Sarah Helm
Helm shows that Atkins was far too much in awe of Buckmaster’s Establishment background, and far too beholden to him; when the full extent of the disaster became known after the war, her loyalty to him, as well as to her agents, caused her to fall in with the glorification of F Section’s exploits.
“Yet she had Buckmaster’s ear and was studying the messages as closely as anyone.” And when Dericourt faced a French military tribunal after the war, Atkins remained completely silent, even though she possessed damning prosecution evidence.
The use by Colonel Maurice Buckmaster of female operatives such as Violette Szabo and Noor Inayat Khan was frowned on by many in the military and Whitehall, who argued that it was illegal for women to go on active duty.

In wartime Britain, Vera Atkins, an intelligent, well-spoken, multilingual and attractive blonde, was at first secretary to and later principal assistant of Lieut.-Col. Maurice Buckmaster, head of the French Section of SOE.
Buckmaster was an old Etonian who could not bring himself to believe that his operation had been penetrated, even when receiving messages in Morse code that were obviously not from the "hand" of the British wireless operators.
Buckmaster, an otherwise decent man with a part-Jewish wife, was given a medal and retired, but 10 years were to pass before Vera Atkins was given a CBE.

Bodington, via Baker Street, arranged a meeting with Gilbert Norman at a pre-arranged address in the rue de Rome near Gare St-Lazare, but it was Agazarian, not Bodington who went to the meeting.

This was a result of the disastrous penetration of the "Prosper circuit", which involved the capture and "turning" of radio operators, and ended with the Germans sending messages to SOE in London thanking it for the regular deliveries of arms and ammunition.
Helm is scathing about Buckmaster's role in all this, not least his blithe confidence that the omission of security codes from messages sent from France meant nothing.
It is possible that her failure to correct Buckmaster's errors quickened Atkins's resolution to discover what had happened to the missing agents, but her loyalty to her boss was enduring.
