Topic: Maurice Faure

  BBC - h2g2 - Gabriel Urbain Faure - the Composer - A481510
Fauré's parents were aware of their son's love for music and they wished Gabriel to have the best musical education possible so that he could develop his natural abilities.
Fauré's music, as a result, is unique, but at the same time agreeable to the ear and never discordantly modern and revolutionary like much of the challenging music written by his contemporaries.
Fauré was impressed by her interpretation of his music, and she came to study with him.

 Notes on the Fauré Requiem
Gabriel Fauré was born on May 12, 1845 in Pamiers, in the Midi-Pyrénées region of southern France.
Fauré, on the other hand, opted for smaller ensembles and spare orchestrations, omitting violins and winds in the Requiem, for instance, when he felt they were unnecessary.
Fauré spent much of his life in the service of the church, but his personal views on religion were unconventional at best, downright cynical or agnostic at worst.

Most of the admirers of the music of Gabriel Fauré are surprised that he actually has an opera to his name.
Among the projects undertaken by Fauré was an opera to be called La tentation de Bouddha for which the poet Albert Samain wrote 750 stanzas, all for nought, and a collaboration with the symbolist poet Paul Verlaine on an opera about commedia dell'arte characters in a hospital.
Maurice Ravel, a student of Gabriel Fauré, wrote only two operas and both were controversial.

Faure is many things: subtle, elegant, graceful, melodic, and haunting, all about in equal measure.
Faure certainly didn't intend these lovely pieces as show-stoppers, but that is what we get here.
For those of you familiar with Faure, you may want to hear Terfel's performance once for its shock value, but this Requiem is most likely not going to appeal to you for very long, unless, of course, you are a fan of the Ethel Merman approach to this repertoire.

Gabriel Fauré wrote his five impromptus over a period of more than a quarter-century (between 1882 and 1909) and accordingly Lonquich treats them as autonomous pieces rather than a set, threading them, jewel-like, throughout the recital.
The fifth impromptu is an instance of Faurè’s increasingly exploratory late style.
Maurice Ravel was one of Fauré’s composition students at the Paris Conservatoire, although his 1908 work “Gaspard de la nuit” owes its inspirations to other sources.

120 of Faure [1845-1924], written in the twilight of his years, offers a surprising glimpse of a composer now soothingly romantic, tuneful and uncomplicated.
Shorn are earlier complexities, and in their place the warmth of an autumnal glow, most beautifully illuminated in the rapturous Andantino.
The sound is warm, lush and full and the Florestan Trio uses the Faure, Debussy and Ravel pieces take advantage of the technology.
