MAURICE CHARNEY, A Reply to John Russell Brown
I wonder why Brown chooses such relatively unambiguous lines to expend his energy on, except that these lines are connected with his idea of Hamlet's unrevealed mystery: "So he might speak of his failure to tell all, and die making an excuse for his rashness or ineffectuality" (26).
Brown is very self-consciously slipping back into the romantic mysteries of Sir Sidney Lee in the late nineteenth century, as if at certain crucial moments the dramatic character can't be trusted with enunciating points that have an important autobiographical clang.
Brown is creating his own original Hamlet for the occasion, and I think he is carried away with a passion to pluck out the heart of Hamlet's mystery and to bring on Shakespeare himself as the taunting author.

To Maurice Russell (Peter O'Toole), virginal Jessie (Jodie Whittaker) is more of an art object, something that appeals to his senses.
For Maurice, many years removed from the age of active propagation, it's a last chance to revive what he calls his "theatrical" interest in the female form.
Jessie never comes close to reciprocating his appreciation of her "chuffs and bumps," but gradually is more welcoming of his ardor (and more confident in the face of it).

O’Toole’s Maurice Russell is a 70-something actor who once was “a little bit famous” on stage in Britain, but now is down to taking minor roles in films — a dying man, a foppish courtier — while fretting about his own increasingly fragile health.
But in Jessie, crude and uneducated as she is, Maurice senses a young woman who needs guidance, education, a father figure and maybe more, all of which this aging Lothario is willing to supply.
O’Toole plays Maurice as a whimsical dreamer whose stage roles have clearly colored his life as he often quotes lines from one of his plays to underline a situation at hand.
