The lands occupied by today's Burkina Faso became the Haute Volta territory in 1947 and in 1958, a self governing republic in the French Community, under Maurice Yaméogo who was re-elected in 1960 and 1965.
The Mossi Kingdom of Ouagadougou established in the 14th century came under the authority of the Songhai Empire in the 15th, recuperated its autonomy in the 16th and became a French protectorate in 1897.
In January 1966, the army chief of staff General Sangoulé Lamizana, assumed power and suspended the constitution.

In symbolic rejection of the nation's colonial past, Upper Volta became Burkina Faso in 1984; the name is a composite of local languages and is roughly translated as “the land of incorruptible men.” The country's dispute with Mali over the Agache border was revived in 1985.
Upper Volta was involved in a border dispute with Mali in 1974 over land containing mineral reserves.

In 1947, Upper Volta was reestablished as a separate territory within the French Union, and in 1958 it became an autonomous republic within the French Community.
In the southwest is the Komoé (Comoé) River, which flows through Côte d’Ivoire to the Gulf of Guinea; in the center are the Mouhon (Black Volta), Nazinon, and Nakambe (White Volta) rivers, which join in Ghana to form the Volta; and in the northeast are several small tributaries of the Niger.

A government was formed, headed by Maurice Yaméogo, leader of the political party known as the Voltaic Democratic Union.
The plateau is drained to the south by the Black Volta (Mouhoun), Red Volta (Nazinon), and White Volta (Nakanbe) rivers and to the east by small rivers connecting with the Niger; none are navigable.
Following the reforms of the French Union in 1957, Upper Volta became, in 1958, a self-governing republic and a member of the new French community.

 Maurice Yaméogo
Maurice Yaméogo (Koudougou 1921 - Ouagadougou, 1993) was the first president of Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso).
He was president from 1960 until 1966, for the Voltaic Democratic Union, and was a member of the government whilst it was still a French colony.
He studied in the Small Seminar of Pabré to became a catholic priest, but lost his sacerdotal vocation when he met Félicité Zagré who later became his wife.
