Mauricio Pellegrino - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mauricio Andrés Pellegrino (born October 5, 1971 in Leones, Argentina) is a footballer who currently is playing for Deportivo Alavés in the La Liga.
A commanding stalwart that helped Valencia to the 2003/2004 Spanish First Division title and UEFA Cup, Pellegrino is an experienced defender who is highly respected.
However, he was frozen out by then-Valencia manager Claudio Ranieri, and consequently joined his former boss (and Ranieri's predecessor) Rafael Benítez at Liverpool F.C. on a free transfer, signing a six-month contract in January 2005.

Pellegrino immediately won the fans' admiration when it emerged that he had turned down the opportunity to sign a two year contract, arguing that it would be fairer on the club to review the situation at the end of the season.
If Benitez's appraisal of Pellegrino failed to be accurate as far as his on-pitch performances were concerned, off the pitch it was easy to understand the Spanish manager’s faith in the Argentine.
Prior to Pellegrino's arrival Sami Hyppia had appeared decidedly jaded, but with the Argentine at his disposal Benitez could afford resting the Finn and the defender replied with a series of majestic displays en-route to the Istanbul final.
