  MoMA | Press | Releases | 2001 | Mauritz Stiller
Stiller’s cinematic heroes are often at odds with society: outsiders, orphans, or runaways, whose connections to their natural surroundings are indicative of their heroic character.
Adapted by Stiller and Ragnar Hyltén-Cavallius from the novel by Selma Lagerlöf.
Stiller has seen too many poor serials." But even in this version, a 1934 reedit that collapses the original two films into one, Stiller’s technical innovations are daring, and they render many scenes unusually effective for the time.

Stiller's output, by contrast, was largely too trivial for the former approach and too varied for the latter.
The chance to see some of Stiller's own work as an actor, which unfortunately remains entirely lost, would provide further illustration of a polarity which even on the evidence of the surviving films is clearly central to the director's art.
Stiller's triumph is to fashion a resolution which appears, however tentatively, to reconcile the conflicting demands of aesthetics and capitalism.

Mauritz Stiller - Films as director:
Stiller also proved adept at comedy, as his films Love and Journalism, Thomas Graal's Best Film—one of the earliest films about filmmaking—and Thomas Graal's First Child reveal, with their skirmishing and coquetry that characterize the relationship of the sexes.
Stiller travelled in 1925 to America at the invitation of Louis B. Mayer of MGM on the strength of his reputation as a sophisticated European director, but mostly (it would seem) because he was Garbo's Svengali-like and obsessive mentor.
All but mesmerized by Stiller, Garbo insisted that he direct her in The Temptress; the inevitable difficulties arose and he was withdrawn from the film.

Of Russian-Jewish parentage, Stiller moved from Finland to Sweden at the age of 20 (fleeing service in the Russian Army) and with mediocre talent and good looks became a leading stage actor and, later, director.
Charles Magnusson hired both Stiller and Sjostrom in 1912 to work at Svensk Biograf (later Svensk Filmindustri) and together they produced some of the most exquisite and sophisticated works of the silent era, propelling the Swedish cinema into the European vanguard.
Stiller also made a number of fine literary adaptations, including three from the novels of Selma Lagerlof: "Sir Arne's Treasure" (1919), "Gunnar Hede's Saga" (1923) and "The Saga of Gosta Berling" (1924).

 Om Erotikon - Mauritz Stiller's ( 1920 ) från DiscLord.se
Labeled an "insolent romp" in a recent article by The Village Voice and praised for its "risqué wit and cheerful amorality" in John Wakeman´s World Film Directors, Erotikon is quite possibly the cinematic granddaddy of all sophisticated comedies and one of the finest achievements of Swedish director Mauritz Stiller.
Erotikon surely pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable on the screen in 1920: Irene, the bored wife of a distracted entomologist, pursues a womanizing aviator, but she may actually be in love with Preben, her husband´s best friend.
Stiller obviously delights in teasing his audience with each scandalous plot twist and every salacious leer, and the result is a deliciously subversive comedy that was very much ahead of its time.

Werner admits that The Wings is the "most controversial" of Stiller's films, but in his brief analysis he makes no mention of the gay theme: yet it is clear that both Bang and Stiller see the father/son relationship between Zoret and Mikael as a coded homosexual one.
Of course, Werner's priority is to celebrate Stiller's contribution to Swedish national cinema; to acknowledge that Stiller was gay, or that The Wings has gay interest, is apparently not part of this ambition.

When Moshe Stiller was drafted into the czar's army, he fled to Sweden and, as Mauritz Stiller, established himself as a stage actor and director.
Stiller's career has always been distorted by the weight of his purported Svengali-esque relationship with his discovery, Greta Garbo, and his disproportionate reputation as the director of the film that launched her career, The Atonement of Gosta Berling (1924).
Stiller, unable to submit to the studio system, spent four unhappy years there and returned to Sweden in 1927, sick and disappointed.

Despite having helped mature the language of cinema and later influencing directors as diverse as Ernst Lubitsch and Ingmar Bergman, Stiller's legacy has often been reduced to the role of Pygmalion to the Galatea of Greta Garbo, as it was he who brought the Swedish siren into the international limelight with his GOSTA BERLING.
Although company heads were unsure of the then-plump Swedish starlet, Stiller insisted that Garbo be included when he was courted by MGM in the mid-20s.
Though it was pleurisy, not the American studio system, that ended Stiller's life, his inscription into history has largely been defined as just another chapter of Hollywood tragedy, at the expense of a body of truly innovative works, represented here by Kino.
