In 1856, the King was judged to be insane, and his younger brother, Wilhelm, served as Regent until his death in 1861.
Wilhelm then became King Wilhelm I. The 1842 model helmet was ridiculous, even by 19th century standards.
It was so tall that it was proposed that the soldiers carry their mess kits inside the top of the helmet, and it was very unpopular with the troops, as it had a tendency to fall off during drill.

Peter Paul Mauser and his brother Wilhelm created the Mauser companies that grew to be the arms giant that it was.
Mauser's attempts to sell this design to various European countries didn't work as most had just equipped their armies with the needle guns and considered them sufficient.
By now the Mauser bolt-action rifle was used by dozens of governments, made in many countries under license, and in many calibers, but the most popular was the 7 x 57.

Paul (1838-1914) and Wilhelm Mauser (1834-1882) were born in Oberndorf, Wurttemberg, the sons of a gunsmith in the Wurttemberg Royal Armory.
The first design that Mauser was credited for the majority of the design work was the Model 1871, though he had collaborated with an American named Norris on the conversion of Chassepot needle guns to handle metallic cartridges several years prior to the M71's introduction.
The 88 marks an important stage in the development of the Mauser action in that it was the first one designed to handle the much higher pressures generated by the then-newly-developed smokeless-powder cartridge.

During the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Krag was pitted against Paul Mauser’s newest creation, the 1893 Mauser, which utilized a new system of loading employing a stripper clip which could be conveniently inserted into the rifle’s breech and five rounds wiped into the rifle’s magazine quickly.
In general the Mauser 98 action was viewed as stronger than the '03's; resultantly the Mauser was the action of choice for hunters looking for power.
Both the Mauser 98 and the Springfield '03 are commonly regarded as World War I rifles; yet, both went on to arm millions of soldiers during World War II.
