The Turk M38 isn't a specific model, rather an arsenal rebuild standard applied to many old rifles that were in Turkish service - as such there are many variations to be found.
The action is not a true Mauser action although the gun is referred to one in the Mauser circles.
These are high quality Mauser actions and the bolt is alread made bent in the event you want to add a scope.

The M1938 Swedish Mauser is in cal 6,5x55mm.
The serial number on this weapon was once thought to be the highest number M38 Swede in existence, but that has since been re-evaluated to be one of the last M38's manufactured on the last day of production.
The Swedish Mauser was probably the finest made of all the Mauser rifles and definitely among the most accurate and pleasant to shoot.

The M38 designation is somewhat confusing, and I daresay that it was invented by the American import companies.
It is the poorest condition Turkish Mauser I have, externally speaking.

Location: WI No, the M38 is not a cut 91/30 (you're thinking of what is known as a 91/38 I believe *hang on to this if you have one of these cut-downs as they aren't that common and are generally regarded as nice shooters).
The M38 preceeded the M44 as a rear-guard rifle.
The M38 never wore a bayonett since it was intended for troops at the rear.

There is the German made M94,M96, then the Carl Gustav M96, M96/38 and the Husquavarna M38, as I recall.
The M38/96's were M96's that were "converted" to the M38 pattern.
With all the ones that have been hacked over the years, finding wood for one (any M38 would work) shouldn't be hard, Numrich Gun Parts has them listed for under 50 bucks.

When Mauser was contracted to make Swedish Mausers in Germany - they were required to use Swedish Steel in the manufacturing process.
This Swedish Mauser is in my belief to be one of the finest examples of the Mauser rifle.

One of the very few gripes I hear about the Model 96 Swedish Mauser (like Princess Inge) is that lo-o-o-o-ong 29½” barrel, which admittedly makes the rifle somewhat unwieldy.
Note that unlike the older M96, the Cavalry M38 has a turned-down bolt handle as well (the “Infantry” model, also called M38, has the straight bolt, and is less valuable).
The M96’s rear sight is calibrated from 300 to 1,000 meters, while that of the M38 is set from 100 to 600 meters.

Mauser, by far the superior firle in WWII in the bolt action section.
Also Stoat, I don't agree with your comments about the mauser, they are a fine rifle that served many countries well; not the best out there, agreed but far from the worst too.
The Mauser action is smoother than the M-N action, but there's a few tricks to using one well - the short bolt handle means that it's not that slow, unless you've got sticky ammo, when it's a total PITA.

The receiver is dated 1941 but I suspect it has been refurbished at least once since then because of its excellent condition.
The Turkish Republic updated many of their old rifles to a common configuration, the Model of 1938 in 8x57 Mauser.
While little is publicly known about this, it appears that all Turkish assembled rifles are marked K. Kale, for the arsenal where they were assembled.

The Czech-made Model 98/22 is a very well-made weapon, by the BRNO factory, one of the best Mauser makers.
The Turkish Model 38 is not a specific model of Mauser, but rather a rework standard.
The Turks can vary, although every K.Kale marked M38 that I have seen was the same (except for minor things like stock furnature).

You can start out with an 8mm Mauser and switch the bbl to 308 or another caliber as long as the bolt face of the new cartridge is similar, which lots of them are.
Typical Mauser calibers, 7.92x57 and 7x57 are available in new loadings as "hunting ammunition and in quantity as old surplus loadings.
Scope mounts for the Mausers are inexpensive, as low as $10 for a Weaver type rail.

The bayonet above fits fine, and is from another Turk mauser I own, as is the sling.
The boltface appears at first exam to be unaltered from the.303 size, but the extractor spring is very strong and appears a bit longer (and angled) to grab the 8mm rim.
The coolest part to me is the Lee trigger guard (designed to fit a removable magazine), fitted together with a '93 Mauser floorplate, follower and magazine spring, creating a more or less standard 5 round Mauser box mag.

There are not too many other rifles that would fit this description, other than the Mauser family of rifles.
Surplus military ammo, which is very cheap, requires that you clean the gun as soon as possible to avoid corroding the barrel because the primer powder used in corrosive ammo contains corrosive salts.

Turkish Models 1903/1938 rifles were not actually a model of a rifle, but really a standard for rifles to be arsenal reworked.
The original 1903 rifle was chambered in the 7.65x53mm caliber but were later rechambered to 7.95x57mm (8mm Mauser).

My buddy bought an M38 turkish Mauser from SHotgun News and i was expecting it to be a P.O.S. but it turns out that it had never been shot and had a perfect bore.
I advised him that it probably still had the Packing grease (cosmoline) inside and that a cleaning was in order.
Guess how much he paid for it and the box of 1000 stripper clip rounds that have yet to misfire.

This model differed from the M1907 in that it was not fully-stocked and used the new hooded-post front sight as found on the M1891/30 rifle.

There is both an M'38 Swedish Mauser and an M'96/'38 carbine, which is an M'96 rifle cut down to M'38 carbine specifications.
The M'38 Swedish Mauser will use the same ammunition as the M'96 but, due to the shorter barrel, velocity will be about 100 f/s less than a given load producing 2,400 f/s in the M'96 rifle.
Just as western Europe was dominated by the M98 Mauser and it variants, much of eastern Europe and Asia has been dominated by the Mosin-Nagant and its decendents.

 Hunt Chat - Military surplus arms are fine deer rifles.
In PA, most deer are shot within 100 yards, so any rifle that shoots to the sights at 100 yards will do just fine, so long as one can find any deer after the PGC deer decimation campaign begun under Gary Alt.
I have a sportised #3 mk1 that i use for a brush gun, Mosin nagant M44 that works as a brush gun as well.
Turk mauser, 2 M91/30's I have not used for deer, but plan to later on, and I know they will work just fine

Well, I posted asking about Swedish Mausers so I guess I should provide a report, even if it's a little incomplete.
Nice proportion to the M38 (call it a short rifle, call it a carbine, whatever you prefer) and the worksmanship is obvious.
As far as historical significance, well, mine isn't "SA" marked, but from what I understand, some of these Swedish Mausers made it into the Winter War between the Finns and the Soviets, either in the hands of Finns or Swedish volunteers.
