Mauser founded the firm Waffenfabrik Mauser Oberndorf (later known as Mauser Werke, Oberndorf) which became Germany’s major military arsenal until their defeat in WWII, after which the factories were closed.
Mauser M98 military rifles, commonly (but inaccurately) known as "Kk98s", have become commercially available in large numbers, hence the actions are popular for building sporters.

Something not to overlook is that you can cut your costs of building a mauser if you can find someone in your area that already has the tools (reamers, headspace guages, action wrench, barrel vice) you get the picture.
On the other hand, an M98 in 8x57 chamber, would have a larger stronger ring, better steel, much larger gas relief ports and the third "safety" lug.
Build a sporter on a Mauser action, and although it my not have any great resale, it will be a better rifle than any domestic out of the box rifle, and I doubt you will want to trade it, with original barrel or rebarrel.

Using the Magnum wouldn't be for power, but for range, flat trajectory, and accuracy of the rifle.
I would use either the Czech Mauser or a Mosin-Nagant, depending on which one will shoot a better group at 100-200 yards.
