  Type 791B Aircraft Cannon - Archived 2/2000
The Mauser company of Germany, one of the world’s leading small arms and cannon firms, was one of the more prolific designers of aircraft cannon from the 1930s through 1945.
These actions are stripping the next round from the link; feeding the round via an oscillating rammer into one of five chambers in the revolving cylinder; and the presentation to the barrel, located at the 12 o’clock position, again a function of the revolving of the cylinder.
The MG213C was included in the mass of war booty and examples of this splendid cannon were soon being tested in the United Kingdom, France and the United States.

M61 Vulcan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The higher speeds of jet-engined fighter aircraft meant that achieving an effective number of hits would be extremely difficult without a much higher volume of fire.
While captured German designs (principally the Mauser MG213C) showed the potential of the single-barrel revolver cannon, practical rate of fire was still limited by ammunition feed and barrel wear concerns.
The Army wanted something better, combining extremely high rate of fire with exceptional reliability.

The M39A3--originally known as the T160 when tested on modified F-86Fs in Korea--was a “revolver” type aircraft gun developed for the United States Air Force.
The weapon was gas-operated and fired from the six-o’clock position at a rate of 1,500 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 3,300 feet per second.

The good news for allied airmen in the Big One is that there were probably few incidents where they lit up their opponents with the less efficient.50 and then had them turn back around and dust them with the more efficient Mauser.
When Tony asked for the ideal WW2 fighter armament, I was tempted to say "2 MG213C in the wingroots, and a 15 mm MG151 in the nose for those long range shots" :-)
However, I have to admit that I don't believe in the tactical value of long-range shots.

Interspersed throughout the book are text boxes with even more detailed information on such items as the M-39 gun.
An example : the Pontiac M-39 was developed from the German Mauser MG213C, a heavy calibre rotary chambered weapon that was being tested by the Luftwaffe at the wars end.
The guns couldn't be ground fired for boresighting unless the gun bay doors were removed as the buildup of breech gasses would cause an explosion and indeed there were incidents of gun doors being blown out during live firing in the air!
