The Mauser company, established by the two Mauser brothers, established its reputation in firearms making in the last decades of the XIX century, and continued to build a very well thought-out and skillfully built firearms until the end of the World War 2.
Some years after the WW2, the Mauser company was restored in the West Germany and continued to build firearms, but mostly a larger-caliber ones, like the aircraft cannons etc. But some of earlier Mauser works became the standards against which all others designs are judged, even after some 100 years after its introduction.
This rifle was designed from the experience, gained on previous Mauser designs, and was first appeared in 1898 as a standard German army infantry rifle.

With the adoption of the U.S. Model 1903 rifle the United States Army was one of the first in the world to abandon the concept of a short rifle usually called a carbine for use by cavalry, artillery, etc., and a long rifle for use by infantry.
This rifle was overhauled at Springfield in March of 1965, as indicated by the SA 3-65 electric penciled on the receiver leg.
During the dark days of WW2, this rifle was provided as "lend lease" material to Canada, where it received a broad arrow within a C marking (denoting its status as Canadian military property) on the right side of the stock and on the left rear of the receiver.

A considerable number of Soviet-captured Mauser 98k rifles (as well as a number of 98k rifles that were left behind by the French after the First Indochina War) were found in the hands of NLF guerrillas and VPA soldiers by U.S. and Allied forces alongside Soviet-bloc rifles like the Mosin-Nagant, the SKS, and the AK-47.
Rifles with original German stocks have "7.62" burned into the heel of the rifle stock for identification and to separate the re-chambered Kar98ks from the original 7.92 mm versions of the weapon then in service or held in reserve, though some 98k rifles were fitted with new, unnumbered beech stocks of recent manufacture.
As of 2005, the Mauser Kar98k rifles that were captured by the Soviets during World War II and refurbished during the late 1940s and early 1950s have appeared in large numbers on the military surplus rifle market.
