 | | Descriptions of the building have been handed down to us by more than one ancient writer, but, unfortunately, these are ambiguous and permit of interpretation in various ways, and the dimensions as recorded are suspected by some authorities. |
 | | Generally speaking, however, the building was rectangular, with the short sides on the north and south; the lower storey, in which was the tombchamber, was solid; bans of sculpture ran round all four sides. |
 | | The other decorations of the Mausoleum take the form of three long bands of sculptured frieze which ran round the building, though the level at which they were applied cannot be determined. |
