Muhammad Iqbal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Iqbal was profoundly influenced by Western philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Henri Bergson and Goethe, and soon became a strong critic of Western society over its separation of religion from state and perceived obsession with materialist pursuits.
Sir Muhammad Iqbal was elected president of the Muslim League in 1930 at its session in Allahabad, in the United Provinces as well as for the session in Lahore in 1932.
Iqbal, serving as president of the Punjab Muslim League, criticized Jinnah's political actions, including a political agreement with Punjabi leader Sir Sikandar Hyat Khan, whom Iqbal saw as a representative of feudal classes and not committed to Islam as the core political philosophy.

Iqbal conceived it not as the shrine of a new faith merging Hinduism and Islam but simply as an altar of love- of India and between Indians.

In a message on 127th birth anniversary of poet -philosopher Allama Iqbal, the President said Allama Iqbal's message was not limited to South Asia alone and his thought provoking ideas have appeal for the humanity and also great relevance for scholars around the world.
The President said, the suppression of the Muslims of South Asia was a source of deep anguish for Iqbal, and being a visionary he could foresee their continued subjugation with the end of colonial rule.
He said it was due to Iqbal's message that the people overcame their despondency and hopelessness and rallied around Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah who led to the ultimate fruition of their dreams.

Statement of Dr. Sir Muhammad Iqbal
The simple faith of Muhammad is based on two propositions-that God is One, and that Muhammad is the last of the line of those holy men who have appeared from time to time in all countries and in all ages to guide mankind to the right ways of living.
Prophetic were the words of the author of the chronogram of Tippu's fall which visitors of Serangapatam find engraved on the wall of Tippu's mausoleum: "Gone is the glory of India as well of Roum." Thus, in the year 1799, the political decay of Islam in Asia reached its climax.
But just as out of the humiliation of Germany on the day of Jena arose the modern German nation, it may be said with equal truth that out of the political humiliation of Islam in the year 1799 arose modern Islam and her problems.
