The witness of the hadith are clearly tendentious attempts to trace the later mawali claims to the prophet.

Undoubtedly, the success of the Arabs in their conquests at the first stage is attributed to the strength of their faith, their unity and their fair and just treatment of the people of the conquered lands.
This phase is distinguished by the backing of the local elements or Mawali, who embraced Islam, for the Arabs in their new conquests that included "Khurasan", Transoxiana, the Sind Basin, Maghreb and Andalusia.
It is also known that Coptic Mawali joined the Arabs in fighting the Romans at the naval battle of Zat Al-Sawari in 34 A.H. Berbers also constituted a majority in the Islamic armies that conquered Spain and Southern France.

The Kharijite rebels formed a separate Muslim community and stressed Islamic egalitarianism in their doctrinal position, holding that any Muslim believer who was morally and religiously meritorious, including even a fl slave, could be elected as the Imam, or leader, of the Muslim community.
The mawali, especially the early ghulat (extremists) among them, introduced many ideas rooted in their Irano-Zoroastrian and other non-Islamic traditions into Shi'ism, which left a lasting imprint on the movement's doctrinal development.

Individuals or families belonging to the subject peoples could only gain a recognised position by attaching themselves to some Arab chief or clan, as mawali (plural of maula), "clients" or adherents; and, though thus dependent, might claim some of the privileges of the ruling faith.
