The landslide in Burns’ favor all but erased a slim lead in the total district vote by incumbent Democratic Congressman John Barrow, bringing the contest back to a virtual 50-50 tie, with only around 1,000 votes separating the candidates.  The narrow margin is well within the 1% threshold margin to initiate an automatic recount.
Burns earned the Friend of the Taxpayers Award by the National Taxpayer’s Union while in Congress.  However, Barrow was named “Unfriendly to Taxpayers” by Citizens Against Government Waste for his support of wasteful programs and pork-barrel spending and received a failing grade of 12 percent from Americans for Tax Reform.
The Burns camp calls the advertisement a lie and says Barrow is using the same scare tactics he used when the two last met in 2004Burns’ Campaign Manager, Tim Baker, believes the Athens Democrat is lying in order to intimidate voters into believing Burns will raise their taxes.

Burned by Burns: Rep. Max Burns, a Georgia Republican, is apologizing to his local Jewish community after criticism that he stood by while a supporter called a potential opponent "that Jew boy down in Savannah."
In a telephone interview with the Forward, Burns said he was "not in the stage area" when the impromptu remarks were made but that he and his wife had denounced the comments, which he called "unfortunate, inappropriate and unacceptable" to Sommers privately that day.

The provision, sponsored by freshman Rep. Max Burns (R-Ga.) and supported by Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), is intended to address highly publicized cases in several states of teachers pressuring parents to medicate children with Ritalin and other psychotropic drugs.
