  phoenixnewtimes.com - News - Mad Max
Max Cavalera and his band Soulfly are onstage churning out a massive wall of heavy metal thunder that, if not exactly powerful enough to raise the dead, is certainly packing enough punch to roll away a few stones.
Rushing to the arms of his ever-present wife and manager Gloria, Cavalera grabs the cell phone and leans in to hear the news Gloria's been dying to tell him since she first flashed Max a concerned look midway through his set.
Max, who's lived in this area for 10 years, is the guitarist who founded Sepultura, one of the biggest names in the international thrash-metal scene, and who now fronts Soulfly, another equally bludgeoning quartet but with a more eclectic, world-music approach.

On the band's website, Max Cavalera said that he founded the band "with the idea of combined sounds and spiritual beliefs." As well as leaving one of the world's most popular heavy metal bands, he had to deal with the unsolved murder of his stepson and best friend Dana Wells.
Max Cavalera also guested on the Deftones breakthrough album Around the Fur in 1997 on a song called "Headup" about Wells' death (he got the name for the band from the lyrics of this song as there is a part that goes "Soulfly, Fly high, So fly, Fly free").
Max Cavalera produced the third album 3, released in 2002, which reached number 46 on the Billboard 200 in that year.

Re:mote Induction: Review: Soulfly - Soulfly
This is the first release to feature Max Cavalera since his split in December of 1997 with Sepultura, the band he helped form.
The split was a messy one; the rest of the band members decided to fire Gloria Cavalera (Max's wife) as their manager without consulting him; coming months after the tragic death of his stepson, Dana Wells, this was too much to take.
Max's trademark roar shows no sign of mellowing, but on this release he also has the backup in the form of Fear Factory's Burton C Bell, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst and Dub War's Benji, who sing on various tracks.

The centerpiece of each controversy is usually Max's wife, Gloria, whose poor job as manager of Seps led to her contract not being renewed, which then led to the split between Max and the rest of the band.
The disc starts with Cavalera playing a berimbau, a stringed instrument he was somehow able to integrate into the heaviest songs of Sepultura.
