Max Schuler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Schuler's cousin Hermann Anschütz-Kaempfe founded a firm near Kiel, Germany, to manufacture navigational devices using gyroscopes in 1905, and Schuler joined the firm in 1906.
In 1923 Schuler published his discovery that if the gyrocompass was tuned to have an 84 minute period of oscillation (the Schuler period) then it would resist errors due to sideways acceleration of the ship or aircraft in which it was installed.
Later, Schuler was a professor of dynamics at the University of Göttingen.

Schuler tuning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As first explained by Max Schuler in his classic 1923 paper, a pendulum whose period exactly equals the orbital period of a hypothetical satellite orbiting just above the surface of the earth (about 84 minutes) will tend to remain pointing at the center of the earth when its support is suddenly displaced.
This is the basic principle of Schuler tuning that must be included in the design of any inertial guidance system that will be operated near the earth, such as in ships and aircraft.
Schuler tuning provides the inertial platform of a navigation system with a feedback loop between its velocity output and its stabilizing gyros such that it behaves as though it were such a pendulum.

Schuler, 28, graduated from Re/Max, the regional touring series, and debuted in the NASCAR Busch Series last year, running a part-time schedule in complement to Matt Kenseth, his old Cambridge High School classmate who was stepping up to Winston Cup.
The plan, then, was for Schuler to shine as brightly as Kenseth had and for Reiser Enterprises to move him into a full-time role with a second team for 2001.
Schuler has not given up his NASCAR dreams.

 The Story of Eighty-Four Minutes
Maximilian Schuler, later a professor of dynamics at Göttingen, developed the gyroscopic ship's compass in the early 1920s and was the first to show that the error due to sideways acceleration of the ship would disappear if the compass could be tuned to a period of 84 minutes.
The phenomenon was very complicated and a good practical solution was found in the 1920s by Max Schuler, the developer of the device, and later professor of dynamics at the famous University of Göttingen in Germany.
This then is a case of automatic Schuler tuning, which is just as important to the practical operation of an inertial guidance system on the earth surface (for ships) as the man made Schuler tuning is for the ship's gyroscopic compass.
