Maximilian Franz Joseph Cornelius Wolf (June 21, 1863 – October 3, 1932) was a German astronomer.
He also discovered Wolf 359, a red dwarf that is one of the nearest stars to our solar system.
Wolf crater on the Moon is named after him, and so is the asteroid 827 Wolfiana.

 Wolf, Max(imilian) Franz Joseph Cornelius (1863-1932)
Between 1919 and 1931, he searched for high proper motion stars, which tend to be relatively close by, and produced a catalogue of 1,566 such objects.
Wolf earned his Ph.D. at the University of Heidelberg, studied in Stockholm for two years, and then returned to spend the rest of his life at Heidelberg, where he founded and directed the Königstuhl Observatory and served as professor of astrophysics.
Wolf also suggested the idea of the modern planetarium while advising on the new Deutsches Museum in Munich.

Max and Margareta Wolf were a Jewish couple from Austria, who emigrated to New York in 1939 on having to leave their native country after the Anschluss.
Max Wolf was the oldest living member of the Austrian Society of Dermatologists and Venereologists in 1989, the year in which the society celebrated its centenary and, indeed, the Festschrift produced for this auspicious occasion was dedicated to him.
Memorabilia of the Wolf family donated in addition to the books, namely a number of medals and other decorations, as well as certificates of distinctions received, etc. have been incorporated into the manuscript collection of the institute.

Max now does not seem apprehensive, but rather angry at them - as we might imagine his mother (never seen) to be with him.
Sixteenth picture: The verbal repetition of Max's threat to his mother ("We'll eat you up") is transformed into an expression of love (consistent with the sometimes over-exuberant behavior of aunts and uncles to a young child, which was one of the models for Sendak's wild things).
Eighteenth picture: Max appears very happy and tired as he arrives home to find his supper awaiting him, and he is already undergoing a transformation back into boy - he has put back the hood of his wolf suit.

The fifth nearest star (third nearest star system) to the Sun, after the Alpha Centauri trinary and Barnard’s Star; it lies in the constellation Leo.
Discovered by Max Wolf in 1918, Wolf 359 is an extremely faint red dwarf that for 25 years was the least luminous star known.
It is also a flare star with the variable star designation CN Leonis, and in 2001 became the first star, other than the Sun, to have its corona registered by near-optical ground-based detection when an emission line of highly ionized iron (Fe XIII at 3,388 Å) was reported.

Max Wolf (Königstuhl Observatory, Heidelberg, Germany) photographically discovered this comet on 1924 December 22.83.
Several astronomers disagreed, including Antoni Przybylski who computed a definitive orbit for Wolf's comet, ran it through the close encounter with Jupiter in 1936 and produced an orbit with notable differences from that of Harrington's comet.
Kamienski examined the orbit of this comet, as well as the comet of Wolf, and concluded the two were identical.
