Snake skeleton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The prefrontal is situated, on each side, between the frontal and the maxillary, and may or may not be in contact with the nasal; the postfrontal, usually present, borders the orbit behind, rarely also above, and in the Pythons a supraorbital is intercalated between it and the prefrontal.
In rare cases (Miodon, Polemon) the transverse bone is forked, and articulates with two branches of the maxilla.
In the former this bone is loosely attached to the lower aspect of the cranium; in the latter it borders the mouth, and is suturally joined to the premaxillary and the prefrontal.

Regions/Landmarks: The squamous portion, or squama, of the temporal bone is the convex, irregular surface that borders the squamous suture.
Articulations: The sphenoid bone articulates with the frontal, occipital, parietal, ethmoid, and temporal bones of the cranium and the palatine bones, zygomatic bones, maxillary bones, and vomer of the face (Figures 7-3c,d,e, 7-4a, and b).
Articulations: The ethmoid bone articulates with the frontal and sphenoid bones of the cranium and with the nasal, lacrimal, palatine, and maxillary bones and the inferior nasal conchae and vomer of the face (Figures 7-3c,d, 7-4a, and b).

Bones of the upper surface of the skull mostly paired.
In the three first families (Devonian to Jura), the mouth is toothed, praemaxillary bones are present, and the maxillaries are large, the bones of the upper surface of the head are paired, branchiostegal rays are present, and the botly is covered with rhomboidal, typically ganoid bony scales.
The mouth was edentulous, praemaxillary bones were absent, but the maxillary bone was well developed, though small; the membrane bones of the skull were paired; branchiostegal rays were present; scales were absent, except on the caudal lobe.

The bone graft was harvested from iliac spine.
Bone gaps (except those in the mandible) are reconstructed with bone grafts, and the overlying soft tissue is reconstructed by whatever means necessary.
All bone grafts, except in reconstruction of the deep orbit, are rigidly fixed with lag screws (1, 11) or miniplates (1, 12).

Suture dividing the frontal bone from the upper maxilla and the cuneiform.
A portion of the suture separating the first maxillary bone from the fourth, appearing in the anterior region of the maxilla and marked in the previous figure from a to b.
Then, the fourth bone is terminated by the sutures separating it from the second [os lacrimale] and third [os ethmoidale] maxillary bones; these sutures (from X along C to c, then to d) run the entire length of the lower part of the eye socket and in the anterior region of the second maxillary bone.

 Inadequate Bone
The three problems faced by the clincian preparing for maxillary implants are the pneumatized sinus, the loss of alveolar ridge height in the maxilla and loss of buccolingual width in the maxilla.
The eggshell of bone is fractured inward and upward to produce a slight separation of the membrane from the bone at one end of the sinus cavity.
A broad, blunt instrument is used to separate the sinus lining from the adjoining bone being especially careful to extend the lifting of the membrane unto the septum, which may separate the sinus into compartments.

Porous block hydroxyapatite as a bone graft substitute in the correction of jaw and craniofacial deformities
The interstitial bone remains and serves as a stromal framework for the formation of new bone.
Maxillary interpositional grafting with direct exposure to the maxillary sinus had a 97% success rate, with 9 (of 289) grafts lost in 3 patients.
In these biopsies, the composition of the adjacent normal maxillary and mandibular bone averaged 66.5% bone and 33.5% soft tissue, indicating that the ratio of hydroxyapatite/bone to soft tissue/vascular space is equivalent to normal bone.

Maxillary augmentation denotes the genre of reconstructive surgeries that address the correction of maxillary hypoplasia.
Maxillary hypoplasia results from the underdevelopment of the maxillary bones and produces midfacial retrusion, creating the illusion of protuberance of the lower jaw.
If the entire maxilla is hypoplastic, it is termed maxillary micrognathia, while premaxillary hypoplasia refers to the part of the maxillary bone between the lateral maxillary incisor fissures.

Corresponding to the classification of Lekholm and Zarb30, the quality of the jaw bone was subjectively graded in four groups by the amount of compact bone and the density of trabecular bone.
The bone surrounding implants placed in the maxillary posterior is often inferior in quality, especially in the bicuspid or molar region.
This is noteworthy because the general quality of the bone in the maxillary anterior is usually superior to that found in the posterior maxilla.

Fibrous dysplasia is a skeletal developmental anomaly of the bone-forming mesenchyme that manifests as a defect in osteoblastic differentiation and maturation.
In fibrous dysplasia, the medullary bone is replaced by fibrous tissue, which appears radiolucent on radiographs, with the classically described ground-glass appearance.
Trabeculae of woven bone contain fluid-filled cysts that are embedded largely in collagenous fibrous matrix, which contributes to the generalized hazy appearance of the bone.

Expression of TGFß, MMPs, BMP6 in Human Maxillary Sinus/Bone Compartments   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
This is influenced by pneumatisation of maxillary sinus in the posterior part of maxilla and bone resorption from both sides - sinus and oral lumens.
In patients suffering chronic allergis sinusitis high maxillary bone resorption is observed. The aim of this study was an immunohistochemical investigation of the TGF-beta, BMP6, MMPs 1-3 and TIMP-1 in the tissue compartments as well as a radiometric assessment of the anterior and posterior segments of maxillary bone of patients suffering chronic allergis sinusitis.
Conclusion: the involvement of mucosal epithelium in the growth and formation of maxillary sinuses and their pneumatisation in physiological conditions as well as in this pathology is connected with the intense synthesis of cytokines and growth factors, which regulate bone remodelling and turnover of surrounding tissues.

The skull is rigidly structured to protect the brain but has many foramina (openings) for passage of nerves (nn.), arteries (aa.) and veins (vv.); it is best to have someone show you where they are; however, knowledge of the foramina of the skull is ESSENTIAL to understanding the anatomy of the head and neck.
The foramina are listed below according to how one can view them on a skull and indicate which bone they are in, what areas they connect and which structures that pass through them; many of the foramina are doubly listed as they can be seen from the inside or outside of the skull.
Anterior and Posterior Ethmoidal Foramina ‑ located between ethmoid and frontal bones;  connect orbit and nasal cavity;  contain (respectively) Anterior and Posterior Ethmoidal nn., aa.,  and veins (nerves are branches of V1; arteries are branches of Ophthalmic artery).
