Incisor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Incisors are the first kind of tooth in heterodont mammals.
The incisors of rodents grow throughout life and are worn by gnawing.
The types of incisors are the maxillary central incisor, maxillary lateral incisor, mandibular central incisor, and mandibular lateral incisor.

Continuous with the dorsal end of the mandibular arch, and growing forward from its cephalic border, is a triangular process, the maxillary process, the ventral extremity of which is separated from the mandibular arch by a > shaped notch (Fig.
The maxillary processes ultimately fuse with the lateral nasal and globular processes, and form the lateral parts of the upper lip and the posterior boundaries of the nares (Figs.

The occlusal surface of a cusp is composed of a mesial and a distal incline.
As an example, a central sulcus is a major linear depression that traverses the occlusal surface of a posterior tooth from mesial triangular fossa to distal triangular fossa.
The right maxillary central incisor may be distinguished from the left maxillary central incisor because the distoincisal angle is more rounded than the mesioincisal angle, and the incisal edge slopes slightly gingivally in a mesiodistal direction.

The mandibular central incisors (#24 and #25) are the smallest and simplest teeth and are bilaterally symmetric.
Mandibular Central Incisors The mandibular central incisors (#24 and #25) are the smallest and simplest teeth and are bilaterally symmetric.

The most common supernumerary tooth which appears in the maxillary midline is called a mesiodens, a tooth situated between the central incisors and occuring singly, or paired, erupted or impacted or occasionally even inverted.
The problem is usually noticed with the eruption of the maxillary lateral incisors together with the failure of eruption of one or both central incisors.
The panoramic radiograph confirmed the presence of a supernumerary tooth in the anterior maxillary region and the presence of space in the anterior region.

The Visible Portion of Anterior Teeth at Rest - Discussion
In complete dentures the incisal edges of mandibular incisors are established by positioning the central incisor 0.5 mm vertical overlap with the maxillary central and a 1 to 2 mm horizontal overlap.
This indicates the maxillary central incisor is superior reference than the rest of the anterior teeth in regards to the amount of visible tooth surface.
The results of this study showed the maxillary central incisor is the most prominent tooth in the mouth; accordingly, extra care should be taken when selecting its size, form, and positioning.

The incisal edge of the deciduous maxillary lateral incisor is more rounded on the mesial and distal sides than the straight incisal edge of the central incisor.
The mandibular deciduous lateral resembles the mandibular deciduous central incisor except that it is slightly longer and wider.

An Anterior Tooth Size Comparison in Unilateral and Bilateral Aplastic Maxillary Lateral Incisors
In the absence of maxillary lateral incisors, the maxillary central incisors were used as a reference to determine the ideal mesiodistal width.
According to the Wheeler Index the average size of a maxillary central incisor is 8.5mm and a maxillary lateral incisor is 6.5mm.
Based upon this ratio, the mandibular central incisors were then multiplied by 1.618 to determine the ideal size of the maxillary central incisors based upon the size of the mandibular central incisors.

The curvature on the distal surfaces of the maxillary teeth ranges from 2.5 mm on the central incisor to 0 mm on the second molar.

The mean visible amount of maxillary incisors in males was 2.66±1.50 mm and in females was 2.91±1.89 mm.
The present study indicated showing more of the maxillary lateral, canine, and mandibular anterior teeth when the lips are at rest is associated with males and it can be considered as a masculine feature, while prominent maxillary central incisors are associated with the females and it can be considered as a feminine feature.
With the increasing age, the amount of maxillary central incisor exposed when the lips are at rest decreased from 3.13 mm at age 20 to 0.93 mm at age 60.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the severity and risk factors associated with root resorption of maxillary central incisors in orthodontic patients who presented with an anterior open bite malocclusion.
Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the presence of an open bite and longer central incisor length s were predictive of increased root resorption.
Teeth investigated were maxillary lateral incisors and second premolars, and mandibular first and second premolars.

The usual cause of impaction of the maxillary central incisor is the presence of a supernumerary tooth or mesiodens.
Impacted central incisors can be classified either as “simple” where the tip of the impacted tooth is near the adjacent cemento-enamel junctions or “complex” where the impacted tooth is positioned high in the vestibule.
He referred to the award-winning presentation of cases by Radney, who noted that the maxillary incisors are centered in the premaxilla, and that the incisal edges of the mandibular incisors are consistently aligned with line NA, regardless of the jaw relationship.

Paleontologists at the Smithsonian Institute were understandably critical of the human status of the fossil tooth and concluded after examination that it was a tooth from a class of fossil ganoid fish known as pycnodonts, possibly Sargodon.
I first showed the tooth to a dental histologist who concurred with the opinion of other dentists that the tooth grossly resembles a human deciduous maxillary incisor though he felt that the curvature of the cingulum was unusually prominent compared to that of most human teeth.
He even stated that the crown of the tooth has a strong similarity to the upper deciduous incisor of man! He also described facets on the lingual surface of the teeth near the incisal edge but these were more punctuate in his specimen.

Symmetry Determination of Solitary Maxillary Median Central Incisor Tooth Morphology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Method: The morphology of the maxillary central incisor was measured using image analysis.
Results: From the labial and axial views of the median central incisor the area of the two images was 98.85% and 96.17% coincident respectively, while the perimeter was 98.97% and 99.03% coincident respectively.
The SMMCI tooth therefore proved to have a high degree of symmetry, supporting the hypothesis that it may represent fusion of the mesial aspects of the maxillary central incisors.
