  Sinusitis
For example, maxillary sinusitis indicates an infection of the maxillary sinus, which is located in the mid-face.
Each sinus -- or group of sinuses in the case of the ethmoids -- is represented on the right and left side of the head.
The bony wall between the roots of the molars and the floor of the maxillary sinus may be quite thin, and an infection that begins in your teeth can travel to the adjacent sinus.

On either side of the crista galli, the cribriform plate is narrow and deeply grooved; it supports the olfactory bulb and is perforated by foramina for the passage of the olfactory nerves.
A curved lamina, the uncinate process, projects downward and backward from this part of the labyrinth; it forms a small part of the medial wall of the maxillary sinus, and articulates with the ethmoidal process of the inferior nasal concha.
The middle ethmoidal cells open into the central part of this meatus, and a sinuous passage, termed the infundibulum, extends upward and forward through the labyrinth and communicates with the anterior ethmoidal cells, and in about 50 per cent.

Expression of TGFß, MMPs, BMP6 in Human Maxillary Sinus/Bone Compartments   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
This is influenced by pneumatisation of maxillary sinus in the posterior part of maxilla and bone resorption from both sides - sinus and oral lumens.
In patients suffering chronic allergis sinusitis high maxillary bone resorption is observed. The aim of this study was an immunohistochemical investigation of the TGF-beta, BMP6, MMPs 1-3 and TIMP-1 in the tissue compartments as well as a radiometric assessment of the anterior and posterior segments of maxillary bone of patients suffering chronic allergis sinusitis.
Conclusion: the involvement of mucosal epithelium in the growth and formation of maxillary sinuses and their pneumatisation in physiological conditions as well as in this pathology is connected with the intense synthesis of cytokines and growth factors, which regulate bone remodelling and turnover of surrounding tissues.

The anterior and posterior walls of the maxillary sinus are formed by the corresponding surfaces of the maxilla and are directly related to the cheek skin anteriorly and to the infratemporal fossa posteriorly.
Sensory innervation of the maxillary sinus is by the infraorbital nerve, posterolateral nasal nerve, and the anterior, middle, and posterior superior alveolar branches of the second division of the trigeminal nerve.
Maxillary sinus mucoceles usually are found incidentally on sinus radiography and are of little significance in the absence of symptomatology or infection.

Maxillary sinus cancer: Most patients with stage I maxillary sinus cancer have their cancer surgically removed by a maxillectomy (removal of bone and mucosa of the maxillary sinus).

Nasal cavity or paranasal sinus rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of sarcoma that is most common among infants and young children, is usually treated with a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

The maxillary sinus is housed in the body of the maxilla, with the inferior orbital wall as the superior border, the lateral nasal wall as the medial boundary, the alveolar process of the maxilla as its inferior border, and the canine fossa as the anterior border.
The main functional component of the maxillary sinus outflow tract is the ostiomeatal complex, which is collectively constituted by the uncinate process, the maxillary ostium, the infundibulum, and the ethmoid bulla.
The maxillary sinus should be inspected with a 30- or 70-degree scope to ensure that no further disease is present within the sinus and that the natural ostium was included in the antrostomy.

The maxillary sinuses are a subset of the paranasal sinuses and can generally be thought of as the sinuses, or cavities, beneath the cheeks and on the sides of the nose.
The maxillary sinuses are the most common region that paranasal sinus cancer arises, and most cancers in the maxillary sinuses are squamous cell carcinomas, meaning they arise from flat, thin cells in the epidermis lining the maxillary sinus.
Depending on the type and stage of the tumors, maxillary sinus cancers are usually treated with surgery and radiation, and in advanced cases chemotherapy.

Paranasal Sinus and Nasal Cavity Cancer:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Cancer of the paranasal sinus and nasal cavity is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the paranasal sinuses or nasal cavity.
There are several paranasal sinuses, including the frontal sinuses above the nose, the maxillary sinuses in the upper part of either side of the upper jawbone, the ethmoid sinuses just behind either side of the upper nose, and the sphenoid sinus behind the ethmoid sinus in the center of the skull.
Treatment of cancer of the paranasal sinus and nasal cavity depends on where the cancer is, the stage of the disease, and the patient's age and overall health.

 Atelectasis, of the maxillary sinus
Obstruction of the ostiomeatal unit and more specifically the ethmoid infundibulum is the common factor in these cases; impaired sinus ventilation with a build-up of negative pressure and inward collapse of the thin orbital floor (and sometimes also the other maxillary walls) is thought to be the mechanism (Fig.1).
Radiographically this condition has to be differentiated from hypoplasia of the maxillary sinus, showing on the affected side a smaller maxillary sinus with a somewhat lower position of the orbital floor; however, in such cases maxillary pneumatization is incomplete (no penetration of sinus pneumatization into the maxillary ridge and malar eminence).
Partial collapse of the maxillary sinus is commonly seen after a Caldwell Luc procedure, but this does not usually lead to cosmetic deformity.

Objective/Hypothesis: Endoscopic sinus surgery has enjoyed impressive success curing chronic disease in sinuses and has virtually replaced the Caldwell-Luc procedure for correction of problems with the maxillary sinus.
Conclusions: A careful assessment of each patient with persistent maxillary sinus disease is central to understanding each specific patient and should include a careful history, a detailed endoscopic examination, repeat computed tomography imaging, culture of secretions, and possible revision surgery.
