Maxima - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maxima is a free computer algebra system, written in Lisp and released under the GNU General Public License.
Maxima is based on a 1982 version of Macsyma, which was developed at MIT with funding from the United States Department of Energy and other government agencies.
Maxima does not include any of the many modifications and enhancements made to the commercial version of Macsyma during 1982-1999 (at least 50 man-years of work).

Maxima is based on Macsyma, which was developed at MIT with funding from the United States Department of Energy and other government agencies.
Since Maxima is written in Common Lisp, it is easily accessed programmatically, just as the underlying Lisp can be called from Maxima.
Maxima is a general-purpose system, and special calculations such as factorization of large numbers, manipulation of extremely large polynomials, etc. are often better done in specialized systems.

In mathematics, the derivative is defined as the instantaneous rate of change of a function.
Taking derivatives and solving for critical points is often a simple way to find local minima or maxima, which can be useful in optimization.
The first derivative test and the second derivative test provide ways to determine if the critical points are maxima, minima or neither.

The Cloaca Maxima was well maintained throughout the life of the Roman Empire and there is evidence to suggest it was still working long after the traditional fall of the Western Empire.
In 33 BC it is known to have received an inspection and overhaul from Agrippa, and archaeology reveals several building styles and material from various ages, suggesting that the systems received regular attention.
The Romans are recorded — the veracity of the accounts depending on the case — to have dragged the bodies of a number of people to the sewers rather than give them proper burial, among them the emperor Elagabalus and Saint Sebastian: the latter scene is the subject of a well-known artwork by Lodovico Carracci.

optimization - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
In mathematics, optimization is the discipline which is concerned with finding the maxima and minima of functions, possibly subject to constraints.
An example of an optimization problem is the following: maximize the profit of a manufacturing operation while ensuring that none of the resources exceed certain limits and also satisfying as much of the demand faced as possible.
Often this is not possible, and heuristic algorithms must be used instead.

 Hazel : search word
The Turkish Hazel (''C. colurna'') is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree in Europe and North America; this species does not conform to the typical stereotype of hazels as being shrubs, instead being a large tree to 35 m tall and with a single straight, stout, trunk up to 1.5 m in diameter.
It is very tolerant of difficult growing conditions in urban situations, which has increased its popularity in civic planting schemes in recent decades.
A number of ornamental cultivars of the Common Hazel and Filbert are grown in gardens, including forms with contorted stems (''C. avellana'' Contorta, popularly known as "Harry Lauders walking stick" from its gnarled appearance); with weeping branches ('C. avellana'' Pendula); and with purple leaves (''C. maxima'' Purpurea).

calculus - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
Calculus is a branch of mathematics, developed from algebra and geometry, built on two major complementary ideas.
It is directly relevant to finding the maxima and minima of a function — because at those points the graph is flat.
Another application of differential calculus is Newton's method, an algorithm to find zeroes of a function by approximating the function by its tangent lines.

In the particular case of Mira, its increases in brightness take it up to about magnitude 3.5 on average, which is a fairly noticeable star.
Individual cycles vary too; well-attested maxima go as high as magnitude 2.0 in brightness and as low as 4.9, a range almost 15 times in brightness, and there are historical suggestions that the real spread may be three times this or more.
Minima range much less, and have historically been between 8.6 and 10.1, a factor of four times in luminosity.

This paper describes a weakly-supervised method for detecting nominal event mentions that combines techniques from word sense disambiguation (WSD) and lexical acquisition to create a classifier that labels noun phrases as denoting events or non-events.
Using a stochastic procedure for adding components it is possible to perform the variational optimisation incrementally and to avoid local maxima.
Results show that the method works very well in practice and correctly infers the number and dimensionality of nontrivial synthetic examples.
