French intervention in Mexico - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The French intervention in Mexico, also known as the Maximilian Affair, was an invasion of Mexico by the army of the Second French Empire, supported in the beginning by the British and Spanish.
Maximilian landed at Veracruz on 28 May (or possibly 29 May) 1864 in the SMS Novara and accepted the crown formally on 10 April, signing the Miramar Convention.
Maximilian was executed on 19 June (along with his generals Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía) on the Cerro de las Campanas, a hill on the outskirts of Querétaro, by the forces loyal to President Benito Juárez, who had kept the federal government functioning during the French intervention.

Archbishop Wenceslaus of Trier, who had long desired an amicable settlement of the odious affair, into which, it appears, he was drawn against his will, publicly withdrew from the "Punctation" on 20 Feb., 1790, and admonished his colleagues to follow his example.
They, however, continued their opposition and on occasion of the imperial capitulation of Leopold II (1790) and that of Francis II (1792) obtained the promise that their complaints concerning the nunciatures would be attended to as soon as possible by a decree of the diet.

Unfinished Homage: Manet's Burial and Baudelaire. - Encyclopedia.com
Manet was told in advance of the Salon of 1868 that his painting on the subject would not be accepted, and his lithographic stone after the painting was seized and almost effaced.
It is well known that Manet's later versions of The Execution of Maximilian are heavily indebted to Francisco de Goya's anti-Bonapartist The Third of May, 1808, of 1814, and that Manet's friend Charles Yriarte had just come out with a monograph on Goya in April 1867 that included an engraving of the painting.
Stylistically, The Burial appears to combine the loose notation of cityscape visible in the Universal Exposition with the handling of space typical of the Execution, which would suggest that the painting is from the same period--late 1867 or early 1868.

Emperor Maximilian -- vulnerable due to several simultaneous wars -- was forced to concede a large measure of control over the new tribunal to the princes, who appointed some of the judges and who (in theory) financed the whole operation.

First, it is necessary to draw distinctions between the two periods of the Dreyfus Affair
The rise of Waldeck-Rousseau was a testament to this swing of the pendulum, and the subsequent elections in the Chamber further reflected it.
The Affair also brought to question what place such zealous nationalism, clericalism, and anti-Semitism had in the Third Republic, and after the Henry suicide in 1898, many conservatives found themselves on the wrong side of what was in the best interests for the French nation.
The very nature of the Dreyfus Affair would be centered around public opinion, and it was no accident that rural and poor areas lacking press influence due to limitations in circulation, would throughout the entire process be immune from the hysteria the press would often times incite.

Frederick and Maximilian had wisely purchased numerous lots between 50th and 52nd Streets, and by the time they passed away (Frederick in 1897 and Maximilian in 1904) the brewery was, literally, sitting atop a small fortune.
