Maximilian von Weichs - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Maximilian Maria Joseph Karl Gabriel Lamoral Reichsfreiherr von Weichs zu Glon (12 November 1881 - 27 June 1954) was a German Generalfeldmarschall and a military leader in World War II.
Weichs warned about his lines being stretched too thinly, but Hitler ignored this, and Weich’s fears materialized when the successful Soviet Operation Uranus, smashed the Italian, Hungarian and Romanian armies on flanks, cutting off the 6th Army inside Stalingrad.
Consequently, parts of Army Group B were taken away from Weichs command and incorporated into a new Army Group Don, led by Erich von Manstein, later in February the remaining part merged with the Don Group into a newly reinstated Army Group South, also led by Manstein.

Leading his corps, von Weichs later took part in the Balkans Campaign, and in preparation for Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, he was assigned to lead the 2nd Army as a part of Fedor von Bock’s Army Group Centre.
Consequently, parts of Army Group B were taken away from von Weichs' command and incorporated into a new Army Group Don, led by Erich von Manstein.
As the German situation was starting to become more dire, in August 1943 von Weichs was appointed Commander of Army Group F in the Balkans defending against possible Allied invasion in what was seen as Germany’s weak underbelly and fighting off local partisan groups that were gaining strength.

After the war, von Rundstedt rose steadily in the small 100,000 man army and in 1932, was appointed commander of the 3rd Infantry Division.
General von Rundstedt had doubts about the survivability of these units without infantry support, and asked for a pause while the infantry caught up; the halt allowed the British to evacuate their forces to Dunkirk.
In November, von Rundstedt had a heart attack, but he refused to be hospitalized and continued the advance, reaching Rostov on November 21.

Erich von Manstein - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Von Manstein was born Fritz Erich von Lewinski in Berlin, the tenth child of a Prussian aristocrat, artillery general Eduard von Lewinski (1829–1906), and Helene von Sperling (1847–1910).
Von Rundstedt accepted von Manstein’s plan that called for the concentration of the majority of Army Group’s armored units into Walther von Reichenau’s 10th Army with the objective of a decisive breakthrough leading to the encirclement of Polish forces west of the River Vistula.
Von Manstein protested, asserting that the victory was almost at hand as he felt he had achieved local superiority, and that with a little more effort, he could crack the Soviet defenses before they could bring up their reserves.

 Walther von Brauchitsch:
von Brauchitsch resented the growing power of the SS, believing that they were attempting to replace the Wehrmacht as the official German armed forces.

von Brauchitsch was made a field marshal in 1940 and was key in Hitler's "blitzkrieg" war against the West, making modifications to the original plan to overrun France.

 Battle of Stalingrad
The offensive began on 28 June 1942 and a swift break-through was made in the Kursk-Kharkov area with General Hermann Hoth's 4th Panzer Army advancing east to Voronezh, then southeast along the south bank of the Don River and General Ewald von Kleist's 1st Panzer Army sweeping along the north bank of the Donetz River.
The Soviets' resistance crumbled under the impact of Operation Blue, and the German armoured thrusts met little opposition in the early stages of this drive, the exception being around Voronezh, a city on the Don that was the target for the 4th Panzer Army and the 2nd Army.
A valiant relief effort, codenamed Operation Winter Storm, was launched by General Erich von Manstein's Army Group Don on 12 December 1942.
