As Maximilian and Carlota had no children, they adopted Agustín de Iturbide y Green and his cousin Salvador de Iturbide y de Marzán, both grandsons of Agustín de Iturbide, who had briefly reigned as Emperor of Mexico in the 1820s.
Franz Liszt wrote a Funeral March in Maximilian's honour in 1867, which was published as No. 6 of Années de Pèlerinage, Troisieme Année in 1883.

In that year, General Agustín de Iturbide, a Mexican-born criollo who originally fought for the pro-Spanish royalists but switched his allegiance to the insurgents in the final phases of the war, was elected head of the provisional junta government and of the regency that held the imperial power that Spain once had.
This enraged the commander of the garrison at Veracruz, Antonio López de Santa Anna, who himself would be President in several terms, during the Secession of Texas and the disastrous Mexican-American War.
There is a parallel claim, that by Matrilineal Descent the descendants of the naturalized Mexican Princely-Countess Anna-Victoria, the favorite niece of the Emperor and daughter of Archduke Louis of Austria, are the pretender line to the abolished throne.

Maximiliano, believing to count on the support of people, accepted the throne of Mexico that the conservatives offered him, between them was the general Juan Nepomuceno Almonte, son of the general Jose Maria Morelos and Pavón.
Maximiliano, with a numerous retinue, arrived to Veracruz on May 28, 1864.
On May 4, 1867, the city was taken and Maximiliano was captured who, along with generals Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía, was shot in the Hill of the Bells on June 14, 1867.

In 1821 Augustin de Iturbide, a former Spanish general who switched sides to fight for Mexican independence, proclamed himself emperor -- officially as a temporary measure until a member of European royalty could be persuaded to become monarch of Mexico.
The dominant figure of the second quarter of that century was the dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.
Maximilian was eventually captured and executed in the Cerro de las Campanas, Queretaro by the forces loyal to President Benito Juarez, who kept the Federal government functioning during the French intervention that put Maximilian in power.

The Emperor and Empress set up their palace at Chapultepec, a hill on the outskirts of Mexico City that had been a retreat for Aztec emperors and more recently a military accademy.
Maximilian ordered a wide avenue cut through the city from Chapultepec to the city center; originally named "Avenue of the Emperor", it is today Mexico City's famous Paseo de la Reforma.
As Maximilian and Carlota had no children, they adopted Agustin de Iturbide y Green a grandson of earlier "Emperor of Mexico", Augustin de Iturbide.

It was build between 1778 and 1783 by order of the priest Manuel de la Borda, to be the retiring house of his father José de la Borda -a notorious miner of Taxco-, who never inhabits it.
The complex is formed by the temple (ascended to Cathedral in October of 1891) and the former convent of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.

In 1876, under the government of Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada, he was appointed Minister of War and he fought the rebelion of Porfirio Díaz against the government.
He was taken to México and imprissoned in the jail of Santiago Tlatelolco on September 13 1878, being realesed some time later and being confined in her own house, with certain prerrogatives.
In 1889, at Lerdo de Tejada's death, Escobedo was commisoned by President Díaz to take the deathbody back to Mexico, as official representative of the Mexican Government.

Tienen un sitio de trabajo maravilloso de verdad se los envidio, y ahora conozco sus caras y sus nombres, la única duda que me queda is who is who, que cara pertenece a que nombre, sobre todo quien de ellos es Pedro Meyer.
Actualmente, aunque fuera de circulación en cuanto a productor de imágenes (temporalmente), sigo encontrándome cotidianamente con ellas, pues el proceso de completar mi formación académica como historiador me lleva a la fotografía, de la misma forma que la fotografía me ha llevado a la historia continuamente.
De hecho estoy comenzando un pequeño ensayo sobre la serie que tomó François Aubert en Querétaro durante la segunda quincena de 1867, a propósito del fusilamiento de Maximiliano de Habsburgo.
