Maximilien de Béthune, duc de Sully - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maximilien de Béthune, duc de Sully (December 13, 1560 – December 22, 1641) was the doughty soldier, French minister, staunch Protestant and faithful right-hand man who enabled Henry IV of France to accomplish so much.
Still a boy, Maximilien was presented to Henry of Navarre in 1571 and remained permanently attached to the future king of France.
Rosny abolished several offices, and by his honest, rigorous conduct of the country's finances was able to save between 1600 and 1610 an average of a million livres a year.

The son of François de Béthune, Baron de Rosny, he was brought up as a Huguenot and was sent at an early age to the court of Henry of Navarre (later Henry IV of France).
During the civil wars Rosny (as he was then called) served Henry both in battle and as a special agent and was wounded in the Battle of Ivry (1590) during Henry's struggle for the French crown.
Rosny was indeed "the king's man," subordinating private and particular interests to the authority of the state.
