Battleship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From 1870 to 1890 battleship design was in a wildly experimental phase, as different navies experimented with different turret arrangements, sizes and numbers, with each new design rendering the previous ones largely obsolete overnight.
Keep the two battleships on the register until the Navy certified that it has within the fleet an operational surface fire support capability that equals or exceeds the fire support capability that the Iowa-class battleships would be able to provide for the Marine Corps' amphibious assaults and operations ashore.
Sometimes the futuristic battleships are actually large spacecraft warships operating in outer space, rather than the open ocean.

The ships, while comparatively big for a cruiser, are not battleships; they adhere to the design premise of a large missile (A large fast warship; smaller than a battleship and larger than a destroyer) cruiser and lack traditional battleship traits such as heavy armor and signigicant shore bombardment capability.

Since in reality, six South Dakota battleships were begun, it might be reasonable for a wargamer or alternate history writer to re-use the most of the names and pennant numbers of the South Dakota class for the Tillman battleships.
If a Tillman battleship had been similarly damaged in the 1940s, one could imagine that she might have been similarly reconstructed, and emerged as a very formidable warship.

The battleship responds by firing at the headquarters of the tsarist generals located nearby onshore.

 History and Heritage - Battleships
The term "battleship" that came into usage in the mid-1880s was derived from a term from an earlier 19th Century naval era, "ship-of-the-line." "Ship-of-the-line" described the primary warship classes that were characterized by large size, heavy armor, and carrying a main battery of large caliber guns as well as smaller caliber guns of varying sizes.
All existing battleships and other similar major combatant types that came before were classified as pre-dreadnoughts, reflecting that their capabilities dropped them to a second class rating.
Standard displacement was limited to a maximum 35,000 tons - standard displacement was the displacement of the completed ship, fully manned, equipped and ready for sea, including ammunition, provisions, fresh water for the crew, and miscellaneous stores, but not including fuel or reserve feed water for the boilers.

However, this weakness is not as great as that of French post-WWI battleships and battle-cruisers, which used face-hardened armor for all of their main armament turret roofs because they thought that steeply falling aircraft bombs were more of a threat to such areas than highly oblique-trajectory naval gun projectiles.
This portion of an armored warship is generally termed the "Citadel" because it represents the 'core' of the armored "castle" in the hull.
However, this upper side hull offered no protection whatsoever against battleship caliber guns at any range or against cruiser guns at close range, though it did insure that the projectile fuzes would be set off and the projectile slowed down appreciably, with much the same result as hits on the armored weather deck.
