 Longevity Report 91
As a measure of lifespan extension I have used both the mean average and maximum lifespan of the experimental animals (or cohort), relative to the controls, known as the cohort mean and maximum lifespan, respectively.
Cohort maximum lifespans — if measured by the age of the last survivor - are subject to high random scatter or uncertainty, since only one animal defines the maximum age from a relatively small group.
A species maximum lifespan is typically defined against a reference population of millions of animals, whereas the number in the experimental cohort only defines the cohort lifespan.

Cellular aging (the Hayflick limit) and species longevity: a unification model based on clonal succession.
In particular, it links the PDLs (population doubling limit) observed for various species to their mean lifespan; it explains the slow decline in PDL as a function of age of the donor; it establishes a thermodynamically stable maximum lifespan for a disease-free population; and it can explain why tissue transplants outlive donors or hosts.
A model is presented which proposes a specific cause-and-effect relationship between a limited cell division potential and the maximum lifespan of humans and other mammals.
In this model, the cells of these beds are proposed to exist in an ordered hierarchy which establishes a specific sequence for cell divisions throughout the organism's lifespan.

The free radical theory of aging
The goal of all research on the free radical theory is to slow aging and increase maximum lifespan.
One main problem with the free radical theory is the failure of antioxidants administered as dietary supplements, like vitamins E and C, to significantly increase maximum lifespan.
By eliminating free radicals from cells through genetic means and dietary restriction, laboratories have extended the maximum age of laboratory animals.

BBL - Longevity Records of North American Birds
The maximum longevity record cannot be longer than the time span that researchers have been studying that species, and the lifespan of the bands used on birds was shorter than the lifespan of the birds for some species.
While no bander goes out to study the maximum lifespan of a species as the only reason for their banding, every bander can contribute to this information.
Records are constantly updated as new encounters are received by BBL and all records listed have been verified by BBL staff.

Idle Current Biasing - Why 70 percent?
As long as the maximum plate dissipation for a tube is not exceeded at idle or under all signal levels from zero signal to maximum clip, it is operating in the "safe operating area" for that tube.
It is important that the tube amp designers take it upon themselves to provide biasing and safe operating area information in the tech manual for the amplifier and insure that the design doesn't greatly exceed tube operating parameters if they want to insure a decent tube lifespan.
The maximum average squarewave dissipation is around 24.8W, again within the safe operating area of the tube, and decreases to zero at full power squarewave output.

Human Calorie Restriction: Frequently Asked Questions
However as of this writing, there is no reliable evidence to support the notion that anything besides CR is capable of retarding biological aging or extending maximum lifespan in adult mammals.
In a groundbreaking study, his team at UCLA were able to show that implementing CR gradually, with especial care to ensuring the nutritional adequacy of the animals&; diet, led to gains in lifespan in adult organisms proportionately similar to those observed in weanlings.
By contrast, the goal of CR is slower aging and extended lifespan.

Free Radical Theory of Aging (hydrogen peroxide precursor)
While mice with elevated catalase levels in the nucleus and cytoplasm experienced small increases in lifespan, animals that produced catalase in their mitochondria were found to experience a 20 percent increase in average and maximum lifespan and had healthier heart tissue.
Hydrogen peroxide is produced during metabolism and is a precursor of free radicals that lead to cell damage, which causes the generation of even more free radicals.
This adds credence to the theory that the mitochondria are a major source of free radicals generated as a byproduct of energy production.

 Scientific American: Lifespan
Life span is defined as the observed age at death of an individual; maximum lifespan is the highest documented age at death for a species.
Although such an extreme age at death is exceedingly rare, the maximum life span of humans has continued to increase because world records for longevity can move in only one direction: higher.
From time to time we are told of a new highest documented age at death, as in the celebrated case of Madame Jeanne Calment of France who died at the age of 122.

 Praise to the forgotten blackcurrant
The antioxidants found in blackcurrants also play an important role in helping to slow down the ageing process - they may not increase lifespan, but they can increase the chances of living to the maximum lifespan.
While the Welsh-grown blackcurrant is no longer commonly used in foods, health experts say the "forgotten fruit" it is even healthier than the highly-praised blueberry, offering almost four times the vitamin C found in oranges and a wealth of health-promoting antioxidants that fight everything from flu and cold sores to cancer and heart disease.
The health-giving properties of blackcurrants are mainly due to the fruit's high source of anthocyanins - the dark colour of blackcurrants reflects its high anthocyanin content - which can guard against flu and cold sore viruses.

Calorie Restriction (CR) Mimetics: What is a CR Mimetic?
Here we demonstrate that CR initiated in 19-month-old mice begins within 2 months to increase the mean time to death by 42% and increase mean and maximum lifespans by 4.7 (P = 0.000017) and 6.0 months (P = 0.000056), respectively.
The efficacy of such compounds would, upon safe and successful testing in animal subjects, pave the way for substantial increases in human lifespan.
This may, then, allow the organism to "eat normally" and enjoy a longevous lifespan.

L-Carnosine Antiaging Miracle Alternative Health Supplement
These experiments revealed that carnosine at a daily dose of 100 mg/kg of body weight was able to extend the mean lifespan of the mice by 20% but had no effect on the maximum lifespan.
The brain membranes of animals treated with carnosine were characterized by a lower malonic dialdehyde (MDA) level, both initial (decreased by 35%) and that produced at 90 min of lipid peroxidation induced by ferric ions and ascorbic acid (by 30%) [10].
Analysis of these data shows that carnosine acts as a true antioxidant protector rather than as an anabolic drug; the weight of the animals treated with carnosine was not significantly different from that of the control animals (table).

Cohort maximum lifespans – if measured by the age of the last survivor - are subject to high random scatter or uncertainty, since only one animal defines the maximum age from a relatively small group.
Most longevity experiments on mammals are done on rodents (rats or mice); lifespan experiments on insects tend to be done on fruit flies.
In each case, to qualify here as anti-aging, the life-extending cofactors have to have been tested against a control group of animals receiving a normal diet, comparable to our modern diet.

 Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis
Their relatively short lifespan (typically five years maximum) and slow growth rates contribute to their generally small size.
Brook trout, along with lake trout, belong to the "char" sub-group of salmonine fishes that is distinct from the "true" trout and salmon.
Aggregations of spawning brook trout can often be observed in small tributaries and along lake shorelines, with solitary females seen digging and remaining within the perimeter of shallow nests, and numerous males looking for an opportunity to dart into these nests to fertilize eggs deposited by the resident female.

Kestrels "hover" facing into the wind, so they are moving through the air, but staying stationary with respect to the ground, this is called "wind-hovering".

A proposed refinement of the mitochondrial free radical theory of aging
A difficulty that has dogged the free radical hypothesis from early days is the very modest increase in maximum lifespan which results, in mammals, from antioxidant therapy(2).
The peroxidation and polymerisation of the lipid molecules of the inner mitochondrial membrane by free radicals is substantially not repaired.
His idea was that a major mechanism of aging might be the accumulation of damage to macromolecules, inflicted by free radicals (that is, molecules which carry an unpaired electron).
