Maxine Brown - Biography - AOL Music
Although she never had many hits, Maxine Brown was one of the most underrated soul and R&B vocalists of the '60s.
Despite her lack of hits, Brown is acknowledged as one of the finest R&B vocalists of her time, capable of delivering soul, jazz, and pop with equal aplomb.
Brown was poised to become a star, and she moved to ABC-Paramount in 1962, but she left the label within a year without scoring any hits.

With the addition of their younger sister, Bonnie, the Browns would go on to record such hits as "I Take the Chance," "Scarlet Ribbons," "The Old Lamplighter" and, most significantly, "The Three Bells," which topped both the country and pop charts for weeks and even ascended to the Top 10 of the R&B rankings.
Here, she tells of his passionate but short-lived romance with Bonnie, his frequent stayovers at the Brown's home, his love of her mother's cooking (especially banana pudding) and a particularly nasty episode in which Presley borrowed her father's brand new Pontiac to drive to one show and kept it for six weeks --and 12,000 miles.
In 1956, the Browns left the Hayride to join Red Foley on the Ozark Jubilee in Springfield, Mo. This move effectively separated them from Presley, who, even though he was becoming famous, was still under contact with the Hayride.

Maxine Brown : Spotlight on Maxine Brown - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
As it happens, it does have much of her best work from that era, although all but two of the tracks are on her finest anthology, Oh No Not My Baby: The Best of Maxine Brown (on a Kent CD).
In addition, the entire album is available on another Kent release, which combines Spotlight on Maxine Brown and all but two songs from her 1967 Wand LP Greatest Hits onto one CD, with the addition of eight rare and previously unissued bonus tracks.
So while Spotlight on Maxine Brown is a good pop-soul album on its own merits, it makes far more sense to seek out one of the Kent anthologies mentioned above than to get the original Wand LP.

Admittedly, she's taken a while to say it, until the right vibe found her, but with a little help from some old friends and a dash of serendipity it finally has, resulting in an inspiring new release.
Brown's voice is equally at ease across an expanse of styles from pop to R&B to gospel, with texture that hints at Tina Turner on tunes new and old, including the aforementioned "All In My Mind" and a pair of Lesley Gore / Ellen Weston interpretations.
Brown wrote four tunes on the CD with help from old friends Rebecca Murphy, Freddie Johnson and Leroy Kirkland, with others penned by Taylor, keyboard wizard Danny Kean, Tracie Robbins, Bruce Jenney and Bob Crawford.
