MAXWELL, the name of a Scottish family, members of which have held the titles of earl of Morton, earl of Nithsdale, Lord Maxwell, and Lord Herries.
After the execution of the regent Morton, the 4th earl, in 1581 this earldom was bestowed upon Maxwell, but in 1586 the attainder of the late earl was reversed and he was deprived of his new title.
William Hamilton Maxwell (1792-1850), the Irish novelist, wrote, in addition to several novels, a Life of the Duke of Wellington (1839-1841 and again 1883), and a History of the Irish Rebellion in 1798 (1845 and 1891).

Lord's ruthlessness at this time was illustrated when he set up a disturbed would-be terrorist as a villain for the League to defeat, resulting in the man's death.
It is possible Lord regained his powers as one of the side-effects of Superboy Prime "punching" the universe and changing history; this may also explain his character change from hero to villain, as might influence by Alexander Luthor and/or the Psycho-Pirate.

Although Lord Maxwell was reluctant to end the uneasy peace which had developed between the two families and rekindle the feud, he assembled 2,000 armed horsemen late in 1593 and, displaying the King's banner, invaded the mountainous district of Annandale, land of the Johnstones.
The next Lord Maxwell was not quite as quick to forgive as the King, however; he grew up vengeful and unforgiving, leading several devastating raids against the Johnstones.

The Maxwell family on the other hand, had but a single progenitor and in theory all those who bear the surname Maxwell from birth are descended from that progenitor.
The Northern Maxwell's, who were in the early years more prolific than the borderers, had had some advantageous marriages to heiresses, but generally had not the great land holdings of the Chiefs family and did not gain lands through royal patronage, so the younger sons of the Northern Maxwell's sort their fortunes elsewhere.
