The number 86 for Smart was presumably chosen because it was bartenders' slang for not serving an inebriated customer, having been derived from clerks' slang for "We're all out of the item ordered." One explanation of the origin of that usage is that 86 was rhyming slang for "nix".
He also portrayed Maxwell Smart in a series of TV commercials in New Zealand for the Toyota Starlet in the late 1980s and in another series of popular Canadian ones in the late 1990s for a dial-around long distance carrier.
Smart and Agent 99 married near the end of the series, and she gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl.

Adams was born in New York City to a Hungarian Jewish father and an Irish American Catholic mother; he was not raised in any religion but became a practicing Catholic later on in his life.
Adams's projects after Get Smart were less successful, including the comedy series The Partners and three attempts to revive the Get Smart series in the 1980s.
He also worked as a voice actor in Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales (1963–1966), but he was more famous as the voice of Inspector Gadget in the initial run of that television series (1983–1985) and the Christmas Special, as well as in later reprises.

One of the many great points Don made (and I'm paraphrasing) was that through Get Smart he would be forever young, handsome, funny and creative and what a great thing that was for all of the cast and crew.
When the Get Smart pilot was rejected by ABC, it was picked up by NBC on the condition that they use Don, whom NBC had under contract.
