If a portfolio was not well-diversified over the measurement period, it may be ranked higher using Treynor than using Sharpe, because Treynor considers only the systematic risk (beta) of the portfolio over the period.
When the Sharpe ratio is calculated for the same portfolio, the increased risk (standard deviation captures both systematic and unsystematic risk) due to using total risk may cause a lowering in the rankings.
When a portfolio drops in ranking using the Sharpe ratio as compared to the Treynor ratio, it is not as diversified as the other portfolios, and its Treynor measure, which considers only systematic risk, is not catching the actual total risk over the measurement period.
