Several factors complicate this evaluation: the larger eruption of 22 May covered essentially the same area as was affected on 19 May; the 19 May pyroclastic deposits were relatively thin and were immediately covered by a volumetrically larger lahar; and all the deposits have been subjected to 70 years of erosion and modification.
