The principal affluents of the Moselle are the Madon and the Orne on the left, and on the right, besides the Meurthe, the Seille, which in one part of its course forms the boundary of Alsace-Lorraine.
About one-half belongs to the basin of the river Meuse, which is enclosed oh the west by the wooded region of Argonne, on the east by the hills known as the Cotes de Meuse.
On the north-east it is watered by the Orne, a tributary of the Moselle, and the Chiers, which runs by Montmedy to join the Meuse.

The only excitement West of the ORNE was when a shell landed 3 yards away from the Jeep, not touching LCpl Cowell but killing a DR to whom he was talking.
It was expected that enemy tanks may come North, therefore a line of Hawkins grenades was laid across the road and a 75mm gun loaded with AP was positioned to fire down the road.

The Germans massed their armoured divisions in the Caen sector, knowing full well that a breakout on their eastern flank would seal their fate in France.
No one can argue negatively that the terrain that the Canadians were forced to fight across was a huge problem, though some may not emphasize it correctly.
It, perhaps, would have been less devastating to the Canadians had the Allies possessed superior armour and high velocity anti-tank weaponry than their enemy, but this was not the case as we will discover in the next section.

Wandering around I finally found another place where there were some rocks exposed....in what the locals call the Swiss Normandy...a right lovely place, especially near St Remy sur Orne, just south of Caen.
The adjacent valley of the Orne is an obvious retreat for many French people to hike, mountain climb, parasail, etc.
Between St Remy and May, I got as close to the Jurassic ammonites as I had to this point in a restaurant called the L'ammonite.
