May you live in interesting times - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
May you live in interesting times is a phrase that is often quoted as being the English translation of an ancient Chinese proverb and curse.
Other sources contend that it may be related to the Chinese proverb, It's better to be a dog in a peaceful time than be a man in a chaotic period.
It is often argued that the word interesting is meant to be a synonym for turbulent or dangerous, while others suggest that no such similarity is necessary for the statement to be imposing.

I was told that "interesting" in the context of this particular ancient chinese proverb meant 'dangerous' or 'turbulent'; therefore, the entire phrase is a curse.
It could also be understood that interesting is equal to drama, and the neverending wars, terror, fear mongering culture that we all seem to live in worldwide is fulfillment of these 'interesting' times we now 'cursed' to live in.
For a long time now I have understood it in more the proverbial sense—difficulties are part of what makes life interesting, so the best attitude is to accept it; if someone were to say it to me, I would receive it as a blessing.

I recently received a request from the PBS television show, "Newshour with Jim Lehrer," to verify the original source of the Chinese proverb, "May you live in interesting times." Newshour was told that in this context, "interesting" means dangerous or turbulent; therefore, the whole phrase is something of a curse.
The point of the phrase has long been meant to be ironic: on first glance, "interesting times" should be good times to live in, so stating it as a curse adds the sense of irony.
Hence, the "curse" that you live in "interesting" times.

This may appear to be stating the obvious but it is an important starting point for any discussion about world growth and its impact on equity markets.
It is possible that in a low inflation, low interest rate environment that profits growth may be a more important factor in determining the return on equities as an asset class, than changes in valuation based on interest rates.
This may be part of the move away from valuation as a primary determinant of stock market returns or may mean the global secular bull market that started in the early 1980s is over.

If it is of Chinese origin, it has somehow escaped the literature, although it may be a paraphrase of a liberal translation from a Chinese source, and therefore unrecognizable when translated back to Chinese.
