Learning that Mayenne was held in force, it was decided to envelop the town to the south with the 357th's 2nd and 3rd Bns while the advance 1st Bn moved straight ahead to seize the only undestroyed bridge across the Mayenne River.

The Sarthe is a 135 kms navigation, extending from the world famous motor racing town of Le Mans, at its north-eastern limit, down to the city of Angers and its confluence with the River Mayenne to the south-west.
In theory you could cruise the length of the river and back in a week, in practice this would mean missing many of its charming villages and sights.
The suburbs of Angers are best passed through quickly, after that the lower Sarthe is a delightful rural river; with grazing cows turning it into a Rosa Bonheur landscape.

St Loup du Gast is a few kilometres North of Mayenne, at the southernmost part of Normandy - or maybe just over the border.
