People in the small Alberta community of Mayerthorpe gathered Tuesday to say goodbye to four RCMP officers gunned down in the line of duty.
The men, stationed at the Mayerthorpe and Whitecourt detachments, were killed March 3 while guarding stolen auto parts and a small marijuana grow operation on James Roszko's Rochfort Bridge farm.
Mayerthorpe's mayor, Albert Schalm, talked about how proud he was of how the town handled being thrust into the national spotlight.

While en route to the property the Bailiffs contacted Mayerthorpe Detachment requesting assistance for the purpose of ” Keeping the Peace.” The call was received and handled by a detachment supervisor.
Mayerthorpe members were briefed by a Bailiff while en route to the property.
Additional support from Mayerthorpe and Whitecourt Detachments was brought in to secure the scene while a Criminal Code and Controlled Drug and Substances Act Search Warrant was processed.

The Mayerthorpe Incident occurred on March 3, 2005 on the property of James Roszko in Rochfort Bridge, northwest of Edmonton near the town of Mayerthorpe, in the Canadian province of Alberta.
With a Heckler and Koch 91, a civilian version of a military assault rifle, Roszko shot and killed Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constables Peter Schiemann, Anthony Gordon, Lionide Johnston, and Brock Myrol as the officers were executing a property seizure on the farm.
Roszko was said to have had a history of criminal and drug-related offences, and members of the nearby Mayerthorpe community interviewed in a CBC story the day following the incident described him as a 'dangerous recluse'.

As you will have learned yesterday a series of events occurred that made the situation at Rozko’s farm somewhat confusing and that raised questions over whether the farm was the possible site of a “grow-op”, or whether the investigation was focused on stolen property.
The province of Alberta will carry out a “fatality enquiry” which is a standard procedure in such cases and the RCMP will cooperate fully in this, as required.

On March 2, 2005, two members of the RCMP attended a rural residence outside of Mayerthorpe, in the County of Lac St. Anne, to assist with a court order seizure of property, with the intent of keeping the peace.
Age 32, joined the Force at Lac La Biche, Alberta, where he was born, and graduated from “Depot” Division in Regina, Saskatchewan, on April 17, 2001.
