The Mayo Clinic is a world-renowned medical practice operated by the Mayo Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Rochester, Minnesota.
In addition, the Mayo Foundation operates a number of smaller clinics and hospitals in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.
Mayo recognized the need for a hospital and joined together to build the 27-bed Saint Marys Hospital which opened in 1889; today, the hospital has 1,157 beds.

Frank Mayo was one of the founders of the Southeast Federation of Mineralogical Societies, Inc. (SFMS), incorporated as a non-profit organization on November 26, 1975.
The name was changed to “Frank Mayo Educational Foundation”, and it was decided to allow undergraduate junior and senior students in college or university as well as graduate students to apply for scholarships.
In 1990 the Mayo family asked that the name be changed to “Mayo Educational Foundation”, its purpose to honor Vesta, Frank, and Winnifred Mayo.

The Mayo Clinic Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) is one of 16 facilities in the United States supported by a grant from the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).
Mayo Clinic was recently granted $1.852 million in direct and indirect costs from the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) to continue the Mayo Traumatic Brain Injury Model System (TBIMS) over the next five years.
The primary mission of the Mayo Clinic TBI Model System is to study the course of long-term recovery after traumatic brain injury and to develop, provide and evaluate innovative services to address identified needs for service coordination and community reintegration for persons with traumatic brain injury.

An $18+ million class action has been filed against the Mayo Foundation and its subsidiary clinics in Arizona, Minnesota, and Florida on behalf of employees who allege that the health provider's method for paying salaried workers shorts employees while netting the company millions of dollars in violation of state labor laws.
Named plaintiff James V. Budziszek, a Mayo salary administrative specialist since 1999, alleges that Mayo pays salaried workers 26 times a year instead of the 26.1 times a year that they should be paid.
Approximately 6,000 salaried Mayo employees, including a majority of the clinic's physicians, may be eligible to participate in the action.
