Mayo Thompson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mayo Thompson (born in 1944 in Houston, Texas) is an American musician and visual artist best known as the leader of the avant-garde rock band Red Crayola (Krayola).
Thompson is credited as producer on early records by The Fall, Stiff Little Fingers, The Raincoats, Cabaret Voltaire, Kleenex and many other seminal groups.
Thompson accepted and the Red Crayola roster ballooned again, this time encompassing many of the important post-rock musicians of the time, including members of Gastr del Sol and Tortoise.

The Red Krayola - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
The one constant in its ever-shifting lineup was principal singer/songwriter/visionary Mayo Thompson, who seemed as concerned with deconstructing the language of "rock" music as with actually expressing himself within it.
Thompson released a solo album in 1970 that was the very definition of "quirky," with an eclectic folk-rock base that bore some rough similarities to Syd Barrett's work.
Thompson was never a champion of hippie ideals, and he was able to make the transition into the punk era effectively by forming new incarnations of the Red Krayola with such musicians as Gina Birch (the Raincoats), Epic Soundtracks (Swell Maps), and Lora Logic (X-Ray Spex).

As endearing as Thompson is this time around, and as much as he makes me feel like I could be his buddy with an open invite to stop by for a beer, it's still his world that we're listening to.
Thompson is content with the music speaking for itself, and if it doesn't meet our standards, then the problem must be our predispositions and not any fault of his.

Certainly, dismissing Mayo’s legacy of fractured pop-exhibitionism as mere improvisational music would be a severe underestimate.
Thompson seems to have anticipated the entire post-rock phenomenon by about 30 years.
The only real question here is whether or not Thompson is too smart for his own good, since the titles of his revitalized freak-outs are so long that they must be seen to be believed.

And since pop is ostensibly the marriage of lyric and melody, and since this Red Krayola material is ostensibly pop (as opposed to jazz or sonic art), the listener is as vehemently confronted with lyrics which speak of the same disregard for polish that epitomizes the bandþs "musicianship" as he is with organized racket.
Thompson is one of those throwbacks to the artsy fartsy 60s, using as much of himself as of current events to make grand pronouncements on the state of his and his bandþs music.
Even if youþve never met Mayo Thompson you are inclined to believe he means what heþs saying, from his declarations of righteousness to his infantile descriptions of fictional characters.

His involvement in Rough Trade, Drag City, and Leiterwagen, in particular, have shown Thompson’s work to supercede basic musical meaning and proven him a galvanizing force in his social circles; in fact one of the defining threads in Thompson’s work is his conceptual and democratic organization of supporting players.
This is a slightly more poeticized example, but shows a similar methodology on the part of Thompson, allowing external sources to imbue his work with a heavily subjective meaning, and thus accentuate the seemingly intentional objectivity of his music.
Recently, Thompson has been in the process of finishing what “under some premises” is a solo album involving support from a number of German Free Jazz players.

For the band's latest, "Introduction," Thompson is joined by McEntire, ex-Slovenly bassist Tom Watson, versatile jazz and rock bassist Noel Kupersmith, accordionist Charlie Abel, and Thompson's Pasadena Art Center College of Design co-artist/musician/ faculty member Stephen Prina.
Thompson has found a way to weld his ramshackle, offbeat humor to such rigidity: Simple guitar songs become ornate melodies with jittery meters while sardonic vocal affectations morph into academic seriousness, and talking blues numbers divert into witty asides.

The Red Crayola - Biography - AOL Music
Under their original spelling, they were a Houston-based trio organized by Mayo Thompson in September of 1966, with Steve Cunningham on bass and Rick Barthelme on drums.
They were signed to Lelan Rogers' International Artists label in 1967 and cut their first LP early that year, assisted by guests such as Roky Erickson (on organ), and Tommy Smith replacing Barthelme.
The group's sound was one of the bolder, less obviously commercial psychedelic incarnations of the era, which was precisely what Thompson had in mind and began the process of building him his multi-generational audience and history as the Red Krayola.

His delight in the story isn't surprising: Its air of intellectual combativeness, and the tension between its cerebral set-up and colloquial punchline, are also features of the records that Thompson, the band's co-founder and sole constant member, has released under the Red Krayola banner over the past 35 years.
But there are also bits from live performance, little parts he might have asked me to play at a show two years ago, and there's a lot of collage work, using digital tape the way people used to use analog tape.
It's a challenging piece of work, but a rewarding one: Once you get past their peculiar handling, the songs are among the most accessible the band has released, and after a few plays, even the most difficult sections reveal a wealth of structure and detail.
