The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos de Lima is one of the finest in South America; there is also a Catholic university.
Besides the palace, the cathedral, and numerous churches, including the monastery of Santa Rosa with the relics of St. Rose of Lima, notable public buildings include the National Library, founded in 1821 by JosE de San MartIn, and the Univ. of San Marcos, founded in 1551.
The library, which once contained priceless documents of the Spanish Conquest and rare European books, was looted by Chilean soldiers during Chile's occupation of Lima (1881–83) in the War of the Pacific.

Reporters Without Borders today vigorously condemned the murder of radio journalist Antonio De la Torre Echeandia on 14 February in Yungay (400 km north of Lima), where the mayor’s driver has been detained as one of the perpetrators and the mayor is widely suspected of being the instigator.
The alleged murderer, aged 28, is from the port of Chimbote and reportedly the boyfriend of Emma Leòn, daughter of the mayor of Yungay, Amaro Leòn Leòn.

Ciancimino was councillor for public works (1959-1964), when Salvo Lima, the representative of Giulio Andreotti, was mayor of Palermo; he oversaw the destruction of the city's green belt, and villas that gave it architectural grace, to make way for characterless apartment blocks.
In 1992, following the mafia murders of Lima, the anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone, and his colleague Paolo Borsellino, Ciancimino offered to infiltrate the mafia and negotiate a solution to terrorist aggression against the Italian state.
He may even have contributed to the 1993 arrest of the boss of bosses, Salvatore "Toto" Riina, whose removal cleared the ground for Bernardo Provenzano, a wilier and less bloodthirsty boss from Corleone, whose name has been linked to that of Ciancimino.
