He served for a time as Chairman of the New Zealand Licensed Restaurant and Cabaret Association.
For a time, rumours suggested that he might return to national politics, standing as a candidate either for the National Party or for ACT New Zealand.

 John Hall (New Zealand) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
December 18, 1824 – June 25, 1907) was born in Kingston upon Hull, England, and later became the Prime Minister of New Zealand.
On October 8, 1879, he was appointed the Premier of New Zealand, although poor health caused him to resign the position less than three years later.
In the final years of his life he was elected mayor of Christchurch, where he died.

Although when I first stood for Mayor I also became a mother for the first time and there was a lot of debate about managing both in the newspapers.

Since the launch the Taskforce has gained increasing support and Mayors from around the country have seen the Taskforce as a way to provide leadership on the crucial issue of employment and livelihood in their communities, to support local initiatives and to work together to share successful projects and solutions.
Mayors will participate in the development of regional/local action groups, which will develop clearly articulated long term strategies to work on whole of government solutions in their areas.

 News - ‘Nagasaki’ Tree for Wellington’s Peace Garden
A camphor tree, originating from a tree that survived the 1945 bombing of Nagasaki, is to be planted by Mayor Kerry Prendergast near the Peace Garden in the Wellington Botanic Garden.
Mayor Prendergast, who is a member of the worldwide Mayors for Peace Network, will plant the tree at the foot of Norwood path adjacent to the Lady Norwood Rose Garden at 10.00am on Monday 27 June.
The flame was presented by the people of Japan to New Zealand as a salute to our efforts to halt the spread of atomic weapons.

New Zealand First has announced a policy of doubling police numbers as part of the party’s commitment to restoring law and order in this country.
New Zealand First proposes to double the number of police over a five year period, starting in 2005 after the next election.

The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs - launched a year ago to eliminate unemployment in the regions - has put Te Araroa into its strategic plan for 2001-2002.
As from April 2001, the 31 mayors on the Taskforce have agreed to support Te Araroa - one of many initiatives at a local level, and one of its 12 nation-wide priorities that are expected to generate jobs.
As at March 2001, 42% of all mayors throughout New Zealand have signed up to the initiative, and the Taskforce is working with the New Zealand Government, Local Government New Zealand, the Community Employment Group, and the Jobs Research Trust to battle unemployment.

In New Zealand, community and grassroots participation is the most common means used by women to influence decision-making.
Under the new Mixed Member Proportional system of voting, the proportion of women MPs increased to 30% at the 1996 election, but there was still only one woman in Cabinet.
