Clark County was named after the intrepid explorer who, in the Lewis and Clark expedition, blazed a way across the continent, then a vast pathless wilderness, and proclaimed to the world the wonderful resources of the great area west of the Mississippi.
The county includes a rectangular area seven townships long and five ranges wide, being 23 to 29, inclusive and ranges 1 east to 4 west, inclusive, except the town 23, range 4 west, in the southwestern corner of the rectangle, which is a part of Jackson County.
Clark County in Central Wisconsin is destined to be one of the wealthiest and most prosperous counties in the country--a garden spot of the world.

In the county, the population was spread out with 29.90% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who were 65 years of age or older.

FRED W. HOEFER, city marshal of Appleton, Wisconsin, who has been connected with this branch of the public service since 1877, was born in Dodge county, Wisconsin, October 1, 1847, and is a son of Thomas and Philipina (Knester) Hoefer, natives of Germany, who came to Wisconsin in 1841.
Mueller was married to Caroline Lillge, daughter of Otto and Freda Lillge, and granddaughter of one of the earliest settlers of Outagamie county.
Clark was married (second) in 1891, to Clara Cook, of Oshkosh, who was principal of the South Side School in that city, and to this union there was born one son: Ray, who died at the age of eight months.

It was created by act of legislature in the year 1873, from which time until 1889, it consisted of two townships, of what is now Hoard and Mayville.
