Autozam Revue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Australia, The Mazda 121 was often referred to as the Bubble car or Jellybean with the car's colour often added to the later, for example: The little green jellybean.
In 1996, the 121 name was shifted to export versions of the Mazda Demio, a tall, five-door hatchback, which became exported as the Mazda2 in its second generation.
A Ford Fiesta rebadged as the 121 was also sold in some markets after 1996, including the British Isles (where the Demio was sold at the same time with its original name).

Between 1975 and 1981, it was used for a large coupé known as the Mazda Cosmo in Japan and North America.
A version of the original 121 was produced by Kia in South Korea, and sold in North America, East Asia, and Australasia as the Ford Festiva.
The 121 has since been replaced by the Mazda Mazda2, which is built on the same platform as the Fiesta and the European version of the Fusion.

Mazda’s 121 was once the car that everyone in the supermarket carpark stopped to look at.
This Mazda 121 was originally launched in March 1996 with a choice of three engines all, of course, straight from the Fiesta.
Poor sales meant that by 1998, only the three-door 1.3-litre and five-door 1.25-litre models were still being offered and the range was dropped from the UK altogether at the end of 1999 (although sales continued in Europe with a facelifted model based on the next generation Fiesta).

On its November 1990 launch, the new Mazda 121 was lifted well clear of its budget predecessor with an obvious link to the MX-5 that took the market by storm only a year earlier.
Mazda split the range into a stripped-out 1.3 model in January 1994 while the top of the range version continued with a new 1.5-litre engine.
A Mazda 121 Shades extra-value pack based on an upgraded version of the 1.3 sold well into 1997 as the final model of this series and ran for almost a year alongside its 121 Metro replacement.

Mazda's little 121 created a stir when it went on sale in 1990 with styling that polarised buyers into either the 'love it' or 'hate it' camps.
The 121 handles and holds the road surprisingly well but in comparison to today's small cars it is a bit harsh.
The 121 is quite an economical number with a well maintained vehicle using about 8.8 litres per 100 km in the city and around 7.3 litres per 100 km on the highway.
