  Mazda 626 and Mazda 6
The 626 (which would eventually become the 6), and its little brother the GLC (which would eventually evolve into the 323, Protegé; and Mazda 3), were the cars that would answer that question.
Both the 626 two-door coupe and four-door sedan were offered again along with a new five-door hatchback "Touring Sedan." All three were exceptionally clean in their styling with a simple front end that put a slatted grille between two pairs of rectangular headlamps and almost featureless fenders and doors.
Mazda's third 626 generally followed the front-drive formula laid down by the second generation with new sheet metal that incorporated styling themes of the second with more conservative tailoring.

Mazda's new 4-cylinder is a much-improved 2.3 L 4 with 160 hp (119 kW); the V6 is a 3.0 L, 220 hp unit based on Ford's Duratec engine block, but with completely reworked cylinders and valvetrain components.
Mazda was the last of the Japanese to increase its entry to "midsize" status; the 6 is still the smallest (and most agile) of the bunch.

 626 Transmission FAQ
Despite Mazda's recurring efforts to create a sports-sedan image for the 626, which would seem to demand a stick shift, most of them went out the door with automatic transmissions, and judging by message boards, mailing lists, and my personal correspondence, a lot of them are coming back in the door with transmission problems.
Mazda's first four-speed automatic, the G4A-EL is a mostly-electronic transmission (hence the "EL") with three shift solenoids, a lockup solenoid, a vane-type pump, and a throttle cable.
Dan Lam's collection of Letters from Happy Mazda Owners was, of course, nothing of the kind, but it did represent a wide spectrum of opinion, from irritation to disgust; it seems to be down now, but we preserve the link as a memorial of sorts.

The Mazda 626 could probably be one of the longest running Mazda series that still hits the market today.
First introduced in the United States in 1979, the first generation 626 was originally aimed to enter that sport coupe and a four-door sedan category and was set to compete with Japanese rival, the Toyota Celica in the sports coupe and the Honda Accord in the sedan.
The third generation 626 was released soon after the end of the second generation in 1988 and lasted up to 1992.

And for quite a few yeas in the late '80s, Mazda offered a great five-door (hatchback) Touring Sedan with a turbocharged engine that was an absolute treat to drive-aside from a bit of torque steer that tended to pull the car in one direction or the other during hard acceleration.
