The Mazda Wankel 13B engine is unique in that it employs two rotors with 3 faces on each rotor which are similar in function to a reciprocating engines pistons.
The Wankel engine is inherently smoother than a reciprocating engine in that there are no linear to rotational translations as exists in a reciprocating engine.
However, even in the case of lubrication subsystem failure the failure mode is gradually, with the engine actually slowing down to a stop as the friction increases rather than suddenly sizing as piston engines are inclined to do.

Mazda 3, Mazda5, and Protege Owners Club - Engine Theory & Discussion
This isn't meant to be a rip on Mazda by any means, but I'm interested in, for now, being the devil's advocate and getting others' input regarding the capabilities and overall technology of current Mazda engines (or at least that of the FS-DE, which I'm familiar with).
Mazda has gotten the message (somewhat) by building the MP3 replacement Mazdaspeed, but the dealers will price the crud out of it because it will be a limited edition.
Also on a better note, I think Mazda is very aware that they're behind on things-- That's why they've made such an effort to hype up the Mazda6 and the new engines it will sport, with all the talk about "raising the bar on the mid-size class".
