Mazda Cosmo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All were GT cars, with the first proving a successful launch for the Mazda Wankel engine and acting as a halo vehicle for the new Mazda brand.
It was known as the Cosmo AP in Japan, and sold internationally as the Mazda RX-5, though in some export markets its piston powered counterpart was called the Mazda 121 (a name later applied to Mazda's subcompact model).
The Cosmo was Mazda's 'large' compact rotary coupe and based on the Mazda RX-4 floorpan and mechanics, but slightly heavier due to body design and more luxurious appointments, including an 5-link rear suspension and rear disc brakes.

Mazda Wankel engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All Mazda Wankel "rotary" engines are essentially a single family - they all derive from the first Wankel experiments in the early 1960s (Wankel was a German Engineer).
The most prominent 4-rotor engine from Mazda was used exclusively for various Mazda-built GT cars (including the 767 and 787B) in replacement of the older 13J.
Mazda was fully committed to the Wankel engine just as the energy crisis of the 1970s struck.

The COSMO SPORTS, or as it was known in the few countries it was exported as the MAZDA 110S was officially launched on May 30, 1967.
The first Cosmo prototypes were produced by August 1963, and in October 1963 the head of Mazda, Tsuneji Matsuda drove the prototype (known as "project L402A") to the Tokyo Motor Show.
The newer version of the Cosmo was slightly updated, with a 5 speed gearbox, power assisted brakes and optional air conditioning (which fitted behind the seats on the rear parcel shelf), and the wheel base was lengthened by some 150mm, which tended to make the car look more balanced.

Mazda Australia took note of all this going on but still refused to allow the rotary option, so in late 85 they offered the 929 with a turbo 2 Lt. option.
Due to their ignorance, Mazda Australia had allowed the HB 929’s “slug” reputation to be fully cemented.
On the Japanese domestic front, Mazda centralized the HB range by removing the sedan version, the 13B RE-SI plus the 12A SPI from the line up in 86 after the new HC series arrived with it’s 13B turbo option (same as the series IV RX-7).

In twin-rotor 13B form, the Eunos Cosmo generated 172kW with 294Nm of usable torque; however, this was not the engine which would drag status-seeking Japanese out of their SEC Mercedes or 8-Series BMWs.
Cosmos are at present in reasonably short supply, but with three compliance holders each authorised to import 25 units, numbers are expected to swell during the coming couple of years.
Everything inside the Cosmo is finished in high-quality materials and cars showing low-kilometres but with wear to the seat bolsters or carpets need to be viewed with suspicion.
