Mazda unveils direct injection diesel engine for cars - 8/10/97
Mazda Motor Corporation has unveiled a new direct injection 2 litre turbo diesel engine which the company considers to be one of the most effective technologies for helping to solve global environmental problems.
The result is a smaller engine size, reduced combustion noise and NOx emissions similar to the level of indirect (pre-chamber) fuel injection diesels, making it an ideal diesel engine for passenger cars.
These features give this engine the quick ignition of indirect injection engines at the start of combustion and the high pressure fuel-air combustion of direct injection engines during the main propagation period.

Mazda unveils direct injection diesel engine for cars - 8/10/97
This compact, 1,998 cc turbocharged diesel generates a maximum output of 100 ps at 3,500 rpm (target), and a maximum torque of 220 Nm at 2,000 rpm (target).
The advanced diesel also has a new combustion system that employs innovative centre fuel injection technology, a four-valve-per-cylinder design and an electronic fuel injection system which places the fuel injection nozzle at the centre of the combustion chamber to inject fuel uniformlv
From outside a vehicle, the new engine is "seen" to be cleaner because under full load conditions, the amount of fuel injected is maximised without increasing fl smoke.

NASIOC - Brief Status Update on Subaru's Diesel Engine
Those engines are designed to be used with emissions reducing systems that can't be used with the high-sulfur diesel we have here, it ruins the components.
Diesel makers now are phasing in EGR (another reason for turbocharging from what I gather), along with particulate filters and even catalytic converters.
Diesel does have a lower implicit refining cost (comes off lower on the cracking tower), but is still constricted with limited refining capacity (the real issue behind rising gas costs, along with increasing Indian and Chinese oil demand).

Opel Twin-Turbo Revolutionizes Diesel Engine Technology
For the first time, Opel engineers have succeeded in applying two-stage turbocharging to a compression-ignition engine that is suitable for everyday driving: The Opel Vectra OPC engineering study presented at the Essen show in November 2003 and now at the Geneva Motor Show has a 1.9-liter CDTI twin-turbo engine which produces 156 kW (212 hp).
The heart of the twin-turbo technology is forced aspiration of the diesel engine through two exhaust-driven turbochargers, which unlike “biturbo” systems operate in series rather than in parallel: A smaller, highly responsive turbocharger for the low engine speed range, a larger turbocharger designed for high output to take over as the revs build up.
The mean effective pressure of an engine is average working pressure acting on the pistons during the combustion process – the higher the value, the higher the power output.

New V6 diesel engine by Mercedes-Benz
When the world’s first car diesel engine was successfully tested exactly 70 years ago, in November 1934 at the Gaggenau plant of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and when the Mercedes-Benz 260 D celebrated its world premiere in February 1936, only very few can have imagined the importance this drive technology would also achieve for passenger cars.
As a further special feature, the new V6 CDI is the first and only diesel power unit to be available in combination with a seven-speed automatic transmission – an advantage which heralds further benefits with respect to agility and fuel consumption.
The fuel consumption of Mercedes passenger cars equipped with this new V6 diesel engine nonetheless remains at the previous, exemplary level.

If an engine makes a lot of torque but little horsepower, it only means that the engine cannot continue to make a lot of torque as RPMs climb.
The reason trucks use large diesel engines is because lower RPM (high torque) engines last longer.
