The Mazda Familia is Mazda's subcompact/compact car family, also known as the Mazda 323 in Europe, North America, New Zealand and Australia, and later known as the Mazda GLC then Mazda Protegé in North America, produced in Japan between 1976 and 2003.
The first Familias were styled by Italy's Giugiaro and shown in 1963 as the Mazda 1000 Berlina.
The Familia was replaced by the new Axela/Mazda3 for 2004, sharing a platform with the current generation Volvo S40 and the second generation Ford Focus (not sold in North America).

Mazda is also the most reliable finisher at LeMans (with the exception of Honda, who have entered only three cars in only one year), with 67% of entries finishing.

In a previous issue of AutoSpeed we presented you the imported-from-Japan Mazda Familia GT-X. The GT-X is a small-sized 134kW four-wheel-drive turbo that's very similar in spec to the Australian delivered KF/KH Ford Laser TX3 Turbo.
Note that Mazda knock sensing is responsive to altered fuel octane, so expect the ECU to pull back power and torque when running on lower grade fuel.
The Familia's paint and panels are all fine, but - for example - the doors are flimsy and don't shut particularly well, and some of the switchgear operation is a bit rough.
